Finally, after all this time, Warner Brothers have arrive to their senses. On October 7th, we will be treated to a heftly helping of one of the greatest Christmas films to ever grace the silver shroud…………in WIDESCREEN.
I was extremely disappointed with the previous DVD release of this film which contained a pan & scan presentation and nothing more than a theatrical trailer in the extras department.
What we have here is a special edition of this large movie, which will occupy audio commentary from both Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Plod, a “making of” featurette, as well as other stocking stuffers which have yet to be disclosed at this indicate time.

Being a stout fan of this movie, I honestly can’t wait for this release. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” has become a holiday tradition in my home, and to be able to sight it the map it was intended to be seen is truly a treat for me.
Aside from the features of the disk, the film itself is the just gift. One of the funniest movies today which serene withstands the test of time even 15 years later. The premise is simple. Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Travel) is hell twisted on having an ancient family Christmas in his home, relatives and all. Of course, the hilarity kicks in when things begin to go awry. There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, it would be difficult to list them all. You have everything from an electrocuted cat, to a house with the brightest Christmas light exhibit known to man. Let’s not forget the dried up turkey, the saucer sled and the dog/squirrel saunter! There’s so great more I could say to praise this movie, but if you haven’t already seen it, [I won't say more]
You really assume your life in your hands every time you sit down with a Chevy Jog film. Let’s face reality here: Chevy Whisk is responsible for several of the worst movies ever made. Does it win more than a few minutes of viewing to peruse the mind numbing folly of “Nothing But Inconvenience,” “The Three Amigos,” and “Spies Like Us”? Flow has certain had his truly embarrassing moments on the grand camouflage. What redeems the guy, at least in my eyes, are several films that play up to the comedian’s colorful alecky, deadpan delivery. “Fletch,” of course, is the gold standard of Chevy Trudge films, but other movies showcase his talents fair as well. I always idea “Deal of the Century” a classic Wander film, as well as “Depraved Play” (although the latter was more of an ensemble represent) . But we need recognize no further than the four National Lampoon Vacation films to truly assume the merits of this comedian turned actor. Actually, I should say three Vacation films since the second installment, where the Griswold family went on a tour of Europe, ranks as one of the most bad stories ever attach on film. Of the three successful entries, “Christmas Vacation” is the best, perhaps even eclipsing the first movie that started it all.

You won’t hear the familiar strains of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” in “Christmas Vacation,” and there are no corpses strapped to the top of a dwelling wagon either. Instead, the film invites us into the Griswold home for an former fashioned Christmas celebration the likes of which soon come catastrophic levels. Clark (Chevy Streak) and Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) Griswold, along with their disinterested kids Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Russ (Johnny Galecki), invite the whole family over for a season filled with happiness. Clark’s parents Clark Sr. (John Randolph) and Nora (Diane Ladd) reveal up, as does Ellen’s folks Art (E.G. Marshall) and Frances (Doris Roberts) . And yes, even Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) makes an appearance to set aside the day. Of course, along with the family comes the inevitable frustrations and stresses everyone who has ever dealt with a reunion dreads. Clark Griswold refuses, at least initially, to tumble into a morass of cynicism and despair amidst the bickering and insults. His invention of a fresh milk preservative has our hero hoping his Christmas bonus will be extra ample this year, astronomical enough so he can install an in ground swimming pool in the backyard. Unfortunately, his boss Frank Shirley (Brian Doyle-Murray) is a scrooge with plans to develop the company more fiscally conservative.
While he waits for the check to reach at the house, Clark embarks on several hilarious projects that haul in the belly laughs. His attempts to screen every square bolt of his house with Christmas lights is a chore requiring several falls off a ladder, pointed verbal repartees with his snotty neighbors Margo and Todd Chester (Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Nicholas Guest), and repeated failures to procure the strands to light up. The acquisition and installment of the Griswold family Christmas tree is another chore handled in Clark’s inimitable style. Imagine the pine they string up in Rockefeller Square every year, subtract roughly five feet from its height, and you have the tree Clark insists on setting up in the house. This thing is so large that the branches knock out the windows when Griswold cuts the rope holding the branches together. No Yuletide season, however, would be complete without a sprint to the slopes for a sledding excursion, an event filled with disastrous implications when Griswold comes up with the intellectual concept to shroud the bottom of his sled with a Teflon based substance. My celebrated scenario involves Clark trapped in his attic for a few hours. He spends his time dressed up in women’s clothing (to end warm) watching venerable home movies of his childhood. His abrupt plunge through the trap door had me laughing for hours afterwards.

The cast of “Christmas Vacation” gels fantastically, far better than any cast in the other three films. Kudos as always go to Randy Quaid as the squirrelly moocher Eddie; a film in this series honest wouldn’t be the same without this character driving Clark to fits of distraction. Beverly D’Angelo is one of those actresses who pick up hotter and hotter with age. The linchpin of the film is, as always, Chevy Walk as the peril prone Clark Griswold. This is a role tailor made for his trace of clumsy, caustic humor. I don’t know about you, but Chase’s depiction reminds me in many ways of my have father–he won’t listen to the advice of anyone else, his ideas are the best ideas, he tosses safety to the wind when working on unsafe projects, etc. But like my Dad–and probably countless other fathers–Clark is accurate and wants his loved ones to have fabulous family memories. The film works so well, I suspect, because most of us instantly spy his character traits in our acquire beloved family patriarchs. Especially when Clark can’t stand the pressure anymore and launches into one of his over the top tirades, again a trademark of our gain fed up fathers.
Although the DVD carries the “Special Edition” impress, the extras are surprisingly sparse. A trailer and a commentary constitute the sum total of goodies available on the disc. Moreover, the commentary doesn’t include Chevy Travel. At least you hear Randy Quaid, Beverly D’Angelo, Johnny Galecki, Miriam Flynn (Eddie’s wife Catherine), director Jeremiah Chechik, and producer Marty Simmons, but why no Clark W. Griswold? Perhaps he wanted too considerable money. His absence is gloomy and mars what is otherwise a big commentary track. I don’t even wait until Christmas to leer this movie; it’s fun works year round. If you haven’t seen it yet, you ought to immediately. You’ll esteem it.

I’d seen the October Sky DVD at the local video store, but avoided it–I imagine because I didn’t know remarkable about it and because I’d read it was unprejudiced a “family” movie and figured it wouldn’t be very appealing. Well, I finally rented it, and now I study why so many of the reviewers here have raved about it. I won’t go into the story–others here have. I’ll objective say that October Sky is simply a astonishing memoir, and it’s very well told in this movie–script, direction, and cast are all first rate, the photography is lovely, and the find evocative. It even captured our thirteen year archaic son’s attention–not a dinky feat for a movie with a PG rating. My guess is you’ll be thinking about Coalwood, West Virgina, and its people for a while after seeing this movie. (I should add I ended up buying both the DVD and Rocket Boys (also published as October Sky), the book on which the movie is based. The book is tall, too.)
Not everybody will like this film. Three people out of the one hundred and seventy five reviewers here didn’t like it. And fifteen more out of the remaining one hundred and seventy two gave it three or four stars, leaving one hundred and fifty seven who notion this an absolutely enormous movie against eighteen who didn’t.
So I mediate I’m obedient enough to say you’ll like this movie even if reading about it doesn’t get it sound that appealing. The bottom line is that this movie is so very human. The boys who are obsessed with rockets are normal, every day boys sparked with enthusiasm about what can be done. They are following their hold stars, their gain sense of what is legal for them, against the opposition of those who don’t understand.
And so, there is a chronicle for each and every one here, a very true fable about following your believe star, not somebody else’s. Yes, it’s a feel reliable movie, but it achieves this through the power of the lawful fable, not out of viewer manipulation.

I illustrious that this is the only Bond film of the entire series that, to date, has not received a single 1-star review here on Amazon. That’s handsome dang estimable!

Director Terrence Young had introduced us to Bond in DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH Treasure. Guy Hamilton then took us down the GOLDFINGER road, and while his attention to action made that the first Atomize Bond film, he also seemed to lose alot of the more down-to-earth flavor that made the first two Bonds so great better.
But, Terrence Young returned for his final Bond film, and somehow managed to provide the perfect mesh of the realistic Bond from the first two films, and the more action-oriented Bond of GOLDFINGER. The result is a very blissful marriage indeed – it’s fair too unpleasant there were very few legitimate children born of it!

THUNDERBALL contains all the spacious locales, villains, and Bond coolness that we savor, without getting into the ridiculous, gadget-filled territory of the later films. It introduces us to our first upright Bond femme fatale, and also gives us the first really consuming Bond girl in Claudine Auger’s Domino character.
The music in the movie by John Barry is very nice, high-lighting the slower bolt of noteworthy of the film. This movie is longer than the previous three by almost 20 minutes, and it is a nice extra cushion to really produce the tension. In fact, Bond is largely absent from the first 45 minutes of the movie, and we finally watch more of the villians plans – what they are and how they are being accomplished – in almost meticulous detail. Somehow, this makes the threat more right. Speaking of the threat, the area being about terrorists stealing nukes and demanding ransom to prevent blowing up an undesignated city, is as current as today’s headlines!
The only actual gripe that can be levied at the film is that Connery does indeed seem a tiny less enthusiastic in the role than he had been. I mediate he’s quiet mostly on track here, but he’s missing the total devotion that he showed in the first three films.
That aside, THUNDERBALL is simply the best Bond – offering everything that makes Bond mountainous, and eliminating all the over-the-top sillieness that made the later films so excruciating to sit through!
THUNDERBALL (1965) the fourth of the James Bond 007 series is among the best of the films. As a follow-up to the phenomenally successful and definitive GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL is impartial a shade less satisfying. In terms of tone and composition the two films are of an era in the James Bond mythology.

Sean Connery returns as the inimitable British Secret Agent, this time state against SPECTRE Agent Number Two, Largo (Adolfo Celi) . SPECTRE has stolen an atomic bomb and is holding the world hostage.
Largo is a first-rate adversary. Strongly-built, silver-haired, wearing an eyepatch, and more physically intimidating than Gert Frobe’s elephantine Goldfinger, Celi’s Largo lacks the faintly tongue-in-cheek air which exciting Goldfinger’s behavior. In fact, the entire film lacks the decidedly laughable undertone of GOLDFINGER. The villains are more vicious, and Connery’s Bond, his wit more honed than ever, is playing for keeps.
The theme song (with Tom Jones singing), status and myth are at least on a par with the predecessor film; however, the action, based in the Caribbean, takes residence largely around, and under, water, and the film drags deplorably during most of the underwater sequences despite the fact that one of these is the climactic fight scene. The change in tempo between land and undersea action is jarring and detracts from the movie in a manner that its innate excellence in other respects cannot compensate.

Of course, Bond successfully seduces unbiased about every woman on the dwelling (except for Miss Moneypenny, the Penelope of the series) . While he is able to derive an ally in Domino (Claudine Auger), he is less successful with others, though as he admits, after all, it is “all for King and Country.” What a sense of selfless sacrifice the man has!
THUNDERBALL was later remade as NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN in which Connery, composed elegant, fit, and feisty (but with toupee) returned to the James Bond role after more than a decade’s hiatus. The remake is colossal to peer as a counterpoint to the fresh.
While THUNDERBALL is not as distinguished fun as GOLDFINGER, if all subsequent Bond films could have been as sterling as THUNDERBALL, even Timothy Dalton would have been a tolerable 007. Let’s give this one FOUR AND A HALF STARS.

Filmed in Northern Canada in the Inuit language, this film is based on a narrative that has been passed down through the generations. This isn’t a documentary, it is an account chronicle, and all of the actors are Inuit. The cinematography is fair, and brings the frozen North to life as never before seen on the mask. Using an almost entirely Inuit cast and crew, with financial assistance provided by the National Film Board of Canada, it won the Camera d-Or for best feature at last year’s Cannes International film Festival. It’s a cinematographic work of art and an impressive film.
At almost three hours long, the yarn takes its time to unfold. The beginning is confusing, especially for an audience with no background in the Intuit culture. It takes a while to distinguish the differences between the characters and it’s hard to follow the tale of the two baby brothers, whose father was not a trustworthy hunter and was therefore ridiculed in the community. Time passes though and the two boys grow up to be strong and able men. There is abolish, jealousy and revenge, with a signature scene of the central character, Atanarjuat, running for his life naked though the ice and snow. All the actors are favorable and their performances note physiological complexity. I could represent to the yarn despite the different cultural trappings.
As the film takes station in an indeterminate past time, arrangement before Europeans ever residence foot on this land, every single tool and detail of Intuit life seems absolutely pleasurable. We peer them building their igloos and living in them, eating raw meat, scraping animal skins, and all the other domestic chores, which provide a setting for a account. There’s also humor as they gain jokes and screech bawdy songs. Some of the rituals were memorable, such as when two men fight over a girl, the fight takes the shape of each one taking turns punching each other in the head. It is an anthropology lesson as well as an keen legend and a good learning experience for me. I had to contain it myself though as no one was holding my hand and explaining things to me, which is both the strength and the weakness of the film. I was plunged upright into it, without a background to maintain me, and I had to give up on notion every single detail and objective relax and let the sage happen.

I loved every moment of the film – the characters, the chronicle, and, especially the set. But I was detached confused when it was over. The myth seemed to be grounded in reality and yet there was talk of spirits. Some of the characters were introduced and not developed and there were places in the record where there seemed to be holes. It made me want to recognize it again and hope to rep it accurate the second time.
In the closing credits, there were some stout shots of the cast and crew during the filming. We saw the sled mounted cameras and the arrangement the scenes were filmed and were again introduced to each of the Intuit actors, this time clad in leather jackets and sunglasses. It made me deem that there will certainly be some very special features on a future DVD, one that I might like to maintain.
I definitely recommend this film which I saw it in a new theater with the latest in surround sound and ample conceal. It’s an immersion in a culture that has always fascinated me and I yearn to know more. Unbiased be prepared for something different. Be prepared to be confused. And, mostly, be prepared to worship it.
“Atanarjuat,” or “the Lickety-split Runner,” is a retelling of an outmoded Inuit folk-tale. (“the Inuit” is an all-encompassing descriptor for the aboriginal tribes of northern Canada and Alaska) . They have pieced together the lifestyle of their people pre-European contact using elders’ knowledge, historical artifacts and journals, and myth and oral history.

This is a fine movie. If you’ve never seen snow on the astronomical prairie (or in this case, tundra), obtain ready to be shy by the stark beauty of the North. The costumes, lifestyle details like skinning animals, hunting patterns, and social dictates, are all enchanting from a historical perspective. The “Atanarjuat” pamphlet tells me that “local artists and elders handmade all costumes, props and sets” and reiterates the film’s authenticity.
That being said, this movie is also very tantalizing. It tells the anecdote of Atanarjuat and his brother, beginning before they were born, with their father’s history, and of the tribe’s 40-year struggle against an tainted spirit. Atanarjuat and Atuat’s like chronicle is compelling and endearing, while the dull descent into conflict is frighteningly shown.
Apparently Margaret Atwood has written an article about the 3 things you should know before you watch this film,…in Inuit culture, spirits are talked about and regarded in the same scheme as living people. Therefore, in the film, there are some spirits that serve Atanarjuat on his straggle, and yet they are dumb. At one point, another character asks, “I notion you were tedious,” but they have to lie to mask for Atanarjuat. When they later accompany Atanarjuat to the village, you will glimpse that nobody talks to them — because they aren’t needed any longer, and are essentially “gone.”
I would recommend this film for a number of reasons: If you’re Canadian (like me) and wish you had more knowledge of the North and its peoples; if you’re from somewhere with no snow, or not grand, and would like to gawk some tundra and permafrost; if you’re a history buff who believes in oral history, or in the combination of oral and documented history; and (and I hope we all do) if you want to recognize a really stout memoir myth of betrayal and redemption.

Here are the criticisms I can gape people possibly making about this film:
1) it is a scientific fact that Caucasians derive it difficult to immediately identify different people from a different urge (for example, you might mix up Atanarjuat and his brother) . The only thing I can say to this is, the film-makers know this, so pay attention to the dialogue, and you’ll find it.
2) The film is sub-titled. Well, yes. Some people despise subtitles, I’ve no concept why, but deal with it. I’ve never heard Inuktitut language before and I understanding it was a huge experience. I’d rather hear them pronouncing things correctly and learn a exiguous more. Besides, the acting is blooming.
3) The film moves slowly. Yes, this is good. But remember, at this time, there wasn’t a lot else to do — your conversation with someone might win four days, because you eat with them, sleep in the same tent as them, hunt with them. They’re not going anywhere. By the same token, the humdrum and deliberate idea patterns and bits of dialogue can be frustrating, as we want them to jabber like us and honest lay everything out on the table. But that is not a allotment of First Nations culture, including Inuit, and they are distinguished more likely to compact a lot of meaning into a slight speech.
I really can’t contemplate of anything else that would get anyone abhor this film. One of my grade 8 ex-students went and was apparently very bored; I imagine that they expected something hastily sharp, and burly of mindless action. There is lots of violence, sex, adore and death in this movie, you honest have to give them credit that they know where it belongs. The music is extraordinary (lots of didjeridoo and throat singing, and lots of conventional songs — even shows singing’s location in their society, titillating to a music teacher) .
Go perceive Atanarjuat! And if you can’t, rent the DVD. It will be a recent experience for you. (we’re now planning a summer whisk to Inuvik, …because of it) .

Stephanie Zimbalist comes out of the woodwork to star in this movie that was inspired by a good sage. I can bet a lot of it was fabricated, but am determined the gist of what happened is factual. It is scary in this day & age to reflect of an American prison being so evil as this one is portrayed, but it is not beyond view.

Zimbalist plays an everyday mother who inadvertantly breaks the law & is sent to prison. While there she is exposed to all sorts of horrifying practices of prison guards abusing their power & residence. At every turn, her attempts to be proactive about the spot fail.
While most movies that deal with women in prison are of the softcore porn variety, rest voice this movie is VERY serious. I would even go so far to say as it’s the women’s prison counterpart to SHAWSHENK REDEMPTION. If you’re enthusiastic in prison movies at all, this one is a must-have.
This movie kept my attention throughout. It’s about a woman who tried to attach her employer as well as herself a miniature money on some business deals and she harm up in prison. While there, she encountered practically every sterotype known to mankind and then some. I would recommend that you witness it for yourself.

There should be no doubt that HARD BOILED is a phenomenal action relate, one of the best ever produced in Hong Kong. Great has been written all over the internet about it in the years since it was released direct-to-video in North America in the very early 90’s.

Now, some 16 years later, through any number of flawed prints, alternate edits, crummy dubs and subtitles of varying quality, not to mention several PREVIOUS special editions on DVD, each with their bear pros and cons, the chance to do upright by this film in so many ways is, typically, blown by the Weinstein machine and their cabal of Hong Kong cinema experts.
Oh, obvious, this disc is watchable, and considering there is now a generation of teenagers out there who weren’t even BORN when this was released, I’m determined there will be current fans made from watching this film. But the film ain’t the spot for the rest of us.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Hard Boiled! Click Here
Who in their proper minds, in 2007, puts DUBTITLES on a “premium” special edition of possibly one of the most well-known Hong Kong motion pictures of all time. DUBTITLES based on a dub that was made, what, 16 years ago now? That dubbed version was indeed responsible for bringing a astronomical many western fans into the fold, but that doesn’t mean we liked it. Or any dubbing for that matter. Impartial because HARD BOILED is over half action sequences doesn’t automatically mean the dialogue sequences are unworthy of even a moderately more lawful translation of WHAT THE CHARACTERS ARE ACTUALLY SAYING IN CANTONESE. Instead, they appear to have paid the receptionist a few bucks to type the unique dub script verbatim into the subtitle stream.
Thankfully, far top-notch subtitles are unruffled available on other, BETTER DVD releases of the film. Some of which even have an image where Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Chow Yun-fat DON’T gaze like they’ve place on about 50 pounds!! I’m no expert on aspect ratios and the like, but I know enough, and I’ve seen enough Chow and Leung movies to know that they don’t quite scrutinize like this in steady life. Gotta wonder who’s intellectual plan it was to Chop the movie, then STRETCH it abet to the safe aspect ratio. I can deem of a few people who probably figured no one would study, or if they did, that they’d unbiased be the usual internet pedants.
If that’s what I am, so be it, but for god’s sake, you mediate a price that so eagerly wants to be viewed as the top shelf for Hong Kong and Asian movies, would actually open treating those very products with some Loyal respect. But then again, watch what they did with their “edit” of the Protector. Funny. And to hear the commentator on that one Elaborate the cuts tells me where he really stands when it comes to his paymasters’ wishes. This edition of HARD BOILED is another clue.
If I were fair reviewing the film, I’d give it 5 stars. But since this is a DVD review, and I managed to accept one at a store that broke street date, AND I’m now out about $18 bucks for something I now know I DIDN’T NEED TO UPGRADE, the best I can muster is (a salubrious) two stars, largely for the interviews on the second disc, which are not dreadful, and the area tour, which is not without interest.
The commentary on the other hand, while not a total write-off, obviously, offers SOME appealing tidbits that are tangentially related to the film itself, but to build a list of errors and ‘best guesses’ that would do your eyes glaze, impartial dig up a copy of the musty Fox Lorber DVD from and listen to this film’s CREATORS, John Woo and Terence Chang contradict Dragon Dynasty’s commentator on several occasions. Or listen to the track on the Criterion edition of this title, where they do the same thing (though in fairness, the Fox Lorber track may have been a longer, uncut version of the Criterion one, only minus Roger Avery and Dave Kehr) . John Woo and Terence Chang MADE the film, so who should you trust? A self-anointed expert? Certain, he means well enough, and he knows more than I do (which is why I’m a lowly peon who doesn’t do commentaries
), but a lot of the less film-specific stuff on this track feels awfully familiar…
Watch this disc for the movie (in Plump-o-Vision) and the interviews. Then do a tiny surfing to obtain one of the capable international versions if you really feel you need an “ultimate edition” in your collection, ’cause this ain’t it.
Hard Boiled is one of the best action movies ever and every John Woo film from the 1980s is golden. Hard Boiled has been released twice in the U.S. now, once from Fox Lobrar and once from Criterion, both are now out of print. (Of course there are numerous companies in Asia selling the film currently, thank goodness for Ebay!) I gain both versions; the Criterion one has the best features but the represent is noticiably darker. This version of Hard Boiled from Dragon Dynasty/Wienstein Company has an fabulous narrate, stand out colors, well lit shaded scenes, and marvelous detail. If I was juding this film on color, brighteness, and overall describe, I would give it 5 stars.
However, there is one major flaw to the film somehow slipped through the cracks. The modern film’s aspect ratio is 1.85:1; wide hide tvs at home are 16:9, or 1.78:1 (Standard tvs are 4:3 or 1.33:1) . Because 1.85 is wider than 1.78:1, you will have microscopic gloomy bars on the top and bottom of a widescreen tv, this is normal. For some reason, they decided to turn this movie into widscreen 16:9, and what this means is images on the sides as well as top and bottom are slice off slightly. Imagine looking at a photograph and then zooming in about 7 percent all around, essentially this is what has happened here. The film is tranquil viewable, but artistic quality is compromised because the image is being reduce off all around.
As for this release, the menus are top-notch and the special features looked well-organized, I haven’t had time to gawk them yet.
Hopefully by releasing this movie many people will accept to recognize the film for the first time. Impartial be aware that the movie is not in its novel format and that the image is carve off slightly on the top, bottom, and sides.
