That’s how announcer Stanley Jones (allege of Lex Luthor) opened this classic explain from 1978. The opening scenes showing the Riddler caught [like a deer in headlights] in Batman’s spotlight, and Dismal Manta tied up atop a whale “piloted” by Aquaman quiet watch frosty.

The appeal of Challenge of the Superfriends is in the fact that they waged an ongoing battle against accurate villains from the amusing books. Most of which were bid counterparts i.e. Green Lantern/Sinestro, Flash/Captain Frigid, Batman/Scarecrow, etc. So the battles never got repetitive the writers wisely mix-matched the contenders. And don’t forget the Legion’s very chilly Darth Vader-headed headquarters based underneath the swamp.

Anybody else remember the scene where the Flash uses his super-speed to grab Captain Frigid and dwelling him in the path of his have coldgun ice-blast thereby freezing himself? “Wild!”

I purchased this for my son’s third birthday. He is absolutely crazy about superheros but most of the current superhero cartoons are too violent. This point to has all the superheros and is perfect for children young and old–we have had kids from 3-10 explore it and savor it. I highly recommend it!

Here’s the keen thing about Richard Linklater’s “A Scanner Darkly”: for a film about heavy drug exhaust spot in the not too distant future, it’s probably one of the most objective and complex anti-drug stories ever told. I say this in spite of the fact that I found the specifics of the position incredibly difficult to pick. All I could comprehend were the general bits of information, most of which were gathered from trailers and commercials. Apparently, a fictional drug called Substance D rules the streets of Orange County, California. It’s a highly addictive, brain-frying narcotic that has a long list of negative side effects. It’s also an illegal substance, one that undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) has gotten quite familiar with in his attempt to locate its main distributor. Upon infiltrating the home of a group of pill popping slackers, he starts using in order to blend in. Unfortunately, this drugged lifestyle eventually leaves him unable to distinguish reality from hallucinations.

Through the cinematic process of rotoscoping, Linklater has enabled the audience to feel the valid same design as Arctor does. Each frame of film was traced over and stylistically repainted, making the world the characters live in–as well as the characters themselves–look half like a cartoon and half like the physical realm. It was an absolutely wonderful gape, and I found that it gave the myth an added dimension by representing a kind of realistic unreality (if that makes any sense at all) . In that sense, it’s almost symbolic that the undercover cops wear slip suits, which are high tech cloaks with anatomical images that continuously shift from one to the next (apparently, a single suit can project millions of appearances) . The position of the world these characters live in is ruled by uncertainty and deception. Arctor is ultimately tested, not only in terms of what he believes to be the truth, but in terms of his location of mind, as well.

I now understand why that rotoscoping process was ancient for an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick original. Only he could have written about the life-destroying effects of an addictive substance. Likewise, only this kind of film can do justice to the point he was trying to gain, namely that you can’t trust anyone, especially when you’re addicted to a great drug. Unfortunately, elaborating on that point would give too mighty away; I will say that all in this movie isn’t exactly as it seems, and more than a couple of characters have hidden agendas. There are a number of truths hidden amongst the film’s eccentric style, and by the time you pick up halfway through, you’re completely lost.

However, this is the kind of movie you don’t mind getting lost in, even if you have no conception what’s going on. I have to admit that while I understood the underlying message of the tale, I barely understood this film as a whole. Watching the sequences unfold and listening to the characters interact is almost as brain scrambling as the disagreeable Substance D is. This is especially right of the conversations between James Barris (Robert Downey, Jr.), Ernie Luckman (Woody Harrelson), and Charles Freck (Rory Cochrane), three of Arctor’s equally spaced out friends. Their esoteric banter flows seamlessly from topic to topic in an Altered Consciousness sort of arrangement, filled with anti-establishment ramblings that almost near off as poetic. It even gets laughable at times; during a road trudge to San Diego, Barris claims he left the front door of their house unlocked and attached a price for burglars to read (which, supposedly, was all fragment of an define plan to describe the intruder and solve the mystery slow the Substance D ring) .

There are some challenging moments shared between Arctor and his girlfriend, Donna Hawthorne (Winona Ryder) . Their relationship revolves around their mutual abuse of Substance D, which doesn’t exactly enhance their moments together so noteworthy as it leaves them in a perpetually dazed region of awareness. Their conversations are almost as esoteric as those of Barris, Luckman, and Freck, the only dissimilarity being a microscopic degree of intimate, meaningful language. One also gets the sense that Arctor is trying to understand Donna as a person, specifically why she’s behaving in distinct ways. He knows how devastating the effects of Substance D can be, and he fears that maybe she’s going too far with her usage. The two expose splendid trouble for one another, even when they earn themselves lost in a conversation about drooping, floating cats.

Despite the free flowing course the anecdote takes, everything does advance together by the waste. “A Scanner Darkly” is one of those movies that can cleverly conceal leisurely a hallucinogenic facade in order to verbalize a serious message. If you’re considering seeing this movie, you have to be willing to net jerked around somewhat, especially when it comes to your expectations for solid characterizations and straightforward storytelling. I assume I knew all along that I’d win this film confusing; the ads made it perfectly certain that this was a very unconventional project. But in the extinguish, I didn’t really mind; the tale takes on the fabricate of a seriously warped puzzle, and I welcomed the opportunity to set aside the pieces together and figure things out for myself.

Let me extinguish by quoting the tagline from Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth”: “A world where everything seems possible, and nothing is as it seems.” I win this to be a fitting plot to narrate the world of “A Scanner Darkly.” If you eye it with that quote in mind, you unbiased might reach away with a better plan of it.

This is a movie you definitely want on DVD – because you’ll want to gawk it first with honest the movie playing, and then after that with the audio soundtrack that includes director Richard Linklater, actor Keanu Reeves and most importantly the daughter of Philip K Dick. The insights that she provides into the movie and the storyline are priceless.

It’s famous to realize that Philip K Dick usually wrote about characters, not action sequences – and specifically, he wrote about those in society who did not “fit in” well. If you gawk through his stories, you’ll obtain they often feature people who are misfits, who society overlooks or forgets. In A Scanner Darkly, the featured ‘oddballs’ are druggies crooked on Substance D – a drug that is never really described, but apparently causes paranoia and hallucinations.

The key here is to sit down with a glass of wine, a tremendous bowl of popcorn and determine befriend for a character-driven record. This isn’t a Rambo or Dirty Dozen memoir – it’s about how people represent to each other, in many subtle ways. It’s a gaze of interactions.

I really enjoy that this was done in a combination of actual life acting and animation. It floors me that in novel times anyone might witness down on this because it is a “cartoon”. Is a Renoir less superb than an Ansel Adams because a Renoir was done by hand? Animation isn’t inherently kiddie. Hand drawn works can believe quite former topics. In this case it is *ideally* estimable to the yarn – because a main aspect of the chronicle is that the characters never quite know what is trusty and what is imagination. Are the bugs really there? Can he trust what he sees? All signs point to NO. The viewer is caught up in this same confused world. If this had been live action, then ‘odd things’ would have instantly stood out. But the point of a drug haze is that everything seems ‘unreal’ – and so outlandish things fit into that scuttle grand more smoothly.

If you don’t know druggies, rest assured that characters like this are quite average – and this yarn is in essence an autobiography of Philip K Dick’s life in the 70s. He lived in a house objective like this with his two brothers after his divorce. He lost his wife and two young girls. He was very paranoid that one of his house-mates was a narc, spying on their druggie activities. One of his friends did mediate bugs were crawling on him. At the raze of the movie is Dick’s precise ending to the account – a list of his friends who were damaged or slain by drugs. Included on this list are his ex-wife and himself.

So what you have in the movie are the druggies at turns being nice to each other, being very cruel to each other, mistrusting each other, and turning to each other for abet. One of the druggies – Bob – is actually a narc cop code-named Fred. He’s gone undercover to figure out who is supplying Substance D to the location. Unfortunately, he’s gotten himself twisted during his undercover work. Even worse, fraction of what Substance D does is to slay your brain – so he’s developed in essence split personalities. The Bob-Druggie share forgets most of the time he IS a narc. The narc half of him, when he’s in the police position, knows he’s spying on this group of druggies but forgets that he is one of them. So when the narc is told to specifically discover on “Bob”, he literally doesn’t realize that this is him.

Here’s where the movie – trying to stuff a dense book into under 2 hours – has some problems. If you haven’t read the book, it’s not definite at all that Narc-Fred forgets who he is when he goes undercover as Bob. It’s a broad twist in the book, but in the movie it seems sure to the watcher that it’s the same person, and it’s not made distinct in the myth that he’s forgetting his “other half”.

Other than that, the account is really elegant straightforward, plot-wise. The druggies are paranoid about the world around them and lope on with their lives. The cops are trying to figure out who the supplier is, so they bug the house and try to secure that information. Like most Dick stories, there’s a twist, although to be impartial I opinion it would be a worthy larger twist. Also, like most Dick stories, there’s cramped female presence and the ending is only slightly hopeful. These aren’t happy-go-lucky romances that he writes – they are dim warnings about where society is heading when it marginalizes those who don’t fit in perfectly.

If you’re confused about the movie, I definitely recommend reading the recent. That might be easier to assume and give you more insight into the characters. Then go serve and scrutinize the movie again – taking it lifeless. Pay attention to the nuances of what they say, and how the characters report. Contemplate how they feel society is treating them – and then prefer a eye what society actually does with these people. Maybe they aren’t quite so paranoid after all – maybe there is some resaon for how they feel.

This series is highly recommended for children of all ages, and is one of the most imaginative and tantalizing at the moment. If some of the other shows build you want to build on earplugs and hurry out of the room, you’ll obtain this one a refreshing change.

I’d say that out of the Backyardigans DVDs that are out now, this one trumps them all.

If you’re clueless, the Backyardigans is a prove about 5 preschool kids (Tyrone, a moose; Tasha, a hippo; Pablo, a penguin; Austin, a kangaroo; and Uniqua, a…..um…..original….looking pink…..person) using their imaginations in their backyard to go to other places (the places represented are the Wild West, a beach, a jungle/desert setting, and a colossal tower) . What makes this reveal rise above most other kids’ shows are its addictive music and its amusing moments, as well as its choreographed dance numbers, which compliment the music nicely. It’s definately helpful viewing for the kiddies.

So the four episodes represented here are:

Surf’s Up – Pablo, Tyrone and Uniqua search for a beach with awesome waves. But will Lifeguard Austin lead them to it? Music – Afro-Cuban/Surfing style

Riding the Range – Cowboy Tyrone is heading to a Wild West party, while Cowpokes Uniqua, Pablo, and Tasha are looking for a theiving bandit. Will their trails evil? Music – Hip-Hop

Race to the Tower of Power – The key to the world is hidden in the Tower of Power, and superheroes Captain Hammer (Austin) and Weather Woman (Uniqua) must prevent supervillians Yucky Man (Pablo) and Dr. Shrinky (Tyrone….complete with long rubber gloves!) from obtaining the key and ruling the world. Music – Latin

Quest for the Flying Rock – It’s another accelerate, as the fable of Stone Step Hill states that a flying rock awaits those who undertake a dangerous quest. Pablo and Tyrone remove the desert path in an attempt to beat Tasha and Uniqua, who are going through the jungle. Music – Disco

All in all, the episodes are titanic viewing for the kids, and there’s enough comic undertones to support the adults entertained (if you grew up during the disco years, I dare you to leer “Quest for the Flying Rock” and not laugh at the dance moves they consume) .

There’s also bonus command of Tasha and Tyrone dancing (to the tunes of “Shake Your Body” and “Dance By the Light of the Moon”, respectively) and previews for some of Prick Jr.’s other shows (like Dora and Diego) .

Two complaints that I have (and they don’t have to do with the shows themselves) – one, the DVDs don’t near with any subtitles on them. I can earn around them by using the closed-captioning function on my TV, but collected. It’s a very minor complaint. And two, sometimes the DVDs are made very poorly, not allowing you to idea other features. It’s not exhibit on this DVD, but it is on my “Cave Party” DVD, and viewing complaints from other customers, it’s imperative that Paramount glean on the ball and fix this.

Regardless, if you have shrimp ones, you will not be disappointed, and you’ll obtain quite a bit of wear out of this DVD. My son and I have.

The review I read in the USA Today suggested that this movie was a stinker. But I mediate the critics dropped the ball. This was a fun movie, and a mountainous choice for the whole family. Evan Baxter is the archaic Buffalo news anchor who has unprejudiced been elected to Congress with the lofty campaign slogan “Change the World.”

This inspires God (played by Morgan Freeman) to instruct to Evan about building an ark. God is wrathful that the dazzling Appalachian mountain vistas he has created are being destroyed by those desiring to form titanic residential areas. He is upset with those who want to kill the natural beauty of the world.

Animals launch following Baxter around two by two, and (like in the Tim Allen flick “The Santa Clause”) he begins to eye like his predecesor (Noah) .

Evan becomes alienated from his congressional colleagues and from his family, but by this point in the film, he is convinced that he is doing the work of the Lord.

As the space unfolded, I started wondering, “Were the animals really essential to the storyline, since the judgment of God was only falling on one situation of the world rather than the entire planet? ” But my wife told me that having the animals advance to Evan from around the world demonstrated to the people that Evan wasn’t crazy, and that this truly was a proceed of God.

Secondly, having the animals reach to Evan ties this in neatly with the Noah legend from Genesis 6.

The movie is not what I would call laugh out loud droll, but there are plenty of cute and heartwarming moments. The message of the film seems to be that we can change the world with one random act of kindness at a time. Both the message and the movie are winners in my book. Recommended.

Evan Almighty was not nearly as terrible as reviews and earlier comments from some made it out to be, but also no where arrive as grand as Bruce Almighty was. Both borrowed from the Oh God! series, which borrowed from earlier stories, etc. Though I gave the movie 4 stars in my rating, it’s probably more like a 3.5 star movie (out of 5) . Salvage it in the suitable spirit (no pun intended here) and you may assume it a 4 star film. Go in with overly high expectations and you’ll probably be thinking that 3 stars was suited.

Evan Almighty was more formulaic, but unruffled offered up a cute fable that is fascinating enough if you go in with reasonable expectations. If you are expecting greatness, then yes, you’ll be disappointed, but if you can bag a touching chronicle that gets (if you’ll pardon the pun) flooded over with special effects, then you could devour this movie.

Much more family safe than was Bruce Almighty, though Bruce Almighty worked better as a comedy because of that while Evan Almighty works better for family entertainment.

This movie looked pleasing kindly on HD DVD. Combo disc format so you can play the movie on standard DVD if principal (flipper disc, DVD on one side, HD DVD on the other) .

I started out thinking the movie was probably best as a rental, but enjoyed it enough to go relieve and reconsider purchasing. If you can bag this one on sale (under $20) it is probably worth adding to your collection. If you are seeing higher prices, wait for a sale perhaps, or try finding a nice former copy from one of the associated sellers.

Adapted from the unusual by Julia Alvarez about the three Mirabel sisters who were murdered by the Trujillo regime in the 1950s Dominican Republic, this 2001 made-for-TV-movie attempts to negate the memoir. I read the book several years ago and found it genuine. However, this film is rather thin and misses the richness of the yarn in several ways.

The film focuses on objective one character, Minerva Mirabel, and that is one of its weaknesses. There were actually three sisters who were murdered and each one of them has her maintain complex epic that is unbiased hinted at in the film. Also, there was one sister who survived and her narrative is significant too. But perhaps the limits of constricting a narrative into a tight time frame forced this abbreviated version.

Salma Hayek is the star and she does do a delicate job. The unfriendly regime seems terrible. But I unbiased couldn’t feel the emotions that were intended by the author. Of course it’s a dismal story; it’s supposed to be. And, because of a wide TV audience, it probably reached a lot of people with its message of these gallant women who became martyrs for their cause.

A ravishing, “minor” movie, with major themes. It is about resistance to a dictator, a woman’s (and women’s) liberation, and about the genuine meaning of what loss of freedom in a society means. Directed by Mariano Barrroso, the movie, spanning almost three decades, chronicles the life of a resistance movement leader, Minerva Mirabal (Salma Hayek), in the Dominican Republic, and her various confrontations with dictator Rafael Lenidas Trujillo (Edward James Olmos), who ruled that island nation with an iron hand from 1930 till his assassination in 1961. The movie focuses on his obsession with her and his attempts over many years to acquire her his mistress, curved on revenge when all his attempts present futile. The movie implies that it was his frequent practice to visit the country, win a young woman that filled his “contemplate,” and then entice her to his palace for a dance. Many young women were thus impregnated and packed to Miami or other resting station afterwards. Minerva has the courage to resist, thus paying the price–her father’s abolish, and the imprisonment of her and her sisters. Mirand becomes the leader of an underground freedom movement under the code-name “the butterfly.” Eventually, she is assassinated by his thugs, her sister and herself beaten to death with clubs. Her death is annually famed in Latin America, as a “violence against women” theme.

Tense, well-acted, delicious and horrifying, “The Times of the Butterflies” is a minor masterpiece, and an inspirational yarn, very grand worth watching, despite the pan-and-scan format of this DVD.

I fair ordered my copy of SuperFuzz. One of the first movies I watched on cable wait on around ‘82( I was 6) . It’s always been a celebrated and although I haven’t seen it in years, I remember the entire movie. Here’s the deal, we have an italian actor from spaghetti westerns and Ernest Borgnine, can’t obtain better than that! IF you like slapstick, pie in your face, bascially rediculous movies then this is for you. Terrence Hill, I retract an Italian actor(he has an accent), is David Hasten. On a routine assignment in the Everglades, collecting on some unpaid parking tickets a native american has yet to pay(outside the tent is a totem pole, isn’t that the disagreeable fragment of the country? ) . The man is out and Dave is accidentally around a nuclear missle launching pad. Dave is exposed to the radiation and gets superpowers. His first confrontation, an aligator that he tries to reason with(starts off by saying “Hey Fella”) . Acctually, it looks like he caused the missle to explode. He tries to anxiety the gator by shooting a round in the air, next thing you examine is the missle exploding in the air. He soon realizes that he has superpowers but his partner, Sgt. William Dunlop doesn’t fill him and has itsy-bitsy patience(that’s Ernest Borgnine) .Plus Dave is dating the sarge’s niece Evelyn. It’s incredible I remember all the details since it’s been at least 10 years since I’ve seen the film. I watched a lot of tv when I was young. Anyway, Dave and Willy are trying to trackdown some mob counterfitters, a Mr. Torpedo and his men including head henchman Paradise. Dave’s powers aid he an Willy on this case causing Torpedo to win nervous(check out the fight scene between Dave, Paradise and the other henchmen. Never concept a guitar could cause so mighty distress) . Did I mention Dave loses his powers when he sees the color red? It has to do with the explosion, ogle there was a blinding red flare when the missle exploded. And this has caused problems during the investigation. Plus it’s only half arrangement through the movie that Dave learns his powers are useless around red. How does he derive out? Well, on the two times he loses his powers there’s a homeless man named Sylvio who witnessed them so Dave thinks Sylvio knows the retort. Sylvio says “it could be anything, a color, a noise, a person…” He does this while he’s driving, and Dave of course is running at the same hasten the car is going. Then he sees red and literally hits a wall. But dave gets too end to the action so the mob guys place him up. They utilize a notorious female singer/actress, who happens to be Willy’s current(check out Ernest Borgnine dancing and wooing this woman, too comical!) to assist extinguish him. They acquire Dave believe the counterfitting is going on in one of Torpedo’s fishing boats. Dave tells Willy, Willy investigates(the unfounded bills are sewn into the bellies of the fish on the boat) and Torpedo’s men sink the ship with Willy aboard. Dave is then accused of killing Willy and is sent to the chair but Dave counteracts its powers(makes the people watching fry instead like in a cartoon) and breaks out of jail(runs upright through a wall) then dives into the ocean to place Willy. Dave finds the sunken ship with Willy aboard, Willy has been locked in the ship’s freezer so it’s a rather “stiff” performance by Borgnine. Dave saves them both by blowing a sizable bubble gum bubble enormous enough for them to float up out of the ocean and into the air. Dave catches the mobsters, while their plane is in the air and Willy fully accepts dave and his modern powers(my well-liked movie scene Ernest Borgnine dancing on top of this balloon shouting “I’m on top of the world” and telling a random thunderclap, “Don’t you dare!” but Willy gets carried away and the boys kill up in Hong Kong or as willy calls it. Hawaya Hong KaKa. How do they acquire there? You’ll have to accumulate the movie and witness. But Dave does pick up the girl who finds away of curbing his powers for gracious. Gain out when you peep Well-organized Fuzz! I have to give kudos to Borgnine. I can’t absorb he got eager in such a crazy movie but it shows how fabulous an actor and person he is. He’s an fantastic actor and top notch star who could have turned his nose up to this but he didn’t. He’s a down to earth actor who likes to work, he’s not Hollywood in any design. I wonder what he now thinks of the movie. Glimpse him as he dances with his approved singer, jumps around on top of the balloon and best of all, stammers as he becomes the police escort when the singer/actress arrives in Miami. She asks him if he’s married and he loses it. His laughter and antics are infectious so if you like Borgnine, and He’s one of my favorites, procure this movie.

I was so mad to finally have Elegant Fuzz on DVD in widescreen. Sadly my joy only lasted as long as it took me to unwrap the DVD. I was all giddy as the DVD started up. The menu camouflage looked amazing and as soon as I hit play, it all went downhill. At first I was amazed at the movie in widescreen, and then it happened. The main title of the movie came up Orderly SNOOPER. My heart sank deep into my chest. Elegant Snooper is what the movie is called in Europe and obvious enough, the version of the film on this DVD is the clean bizarro UK version that I already have on a DVD I imported from England.

A impress to anyone reading, THIS IS NOT THE Well-kept FUZZ YOU WATCHED AS A KID. This version of the movie is plump of unique extra scenes. That sounds like a plus, but what absolutely kills this version of the movie is the fact that the voiceovers are completely different. Aside from Ernest Borgnine, honest about everyone’s shriek is different from the US version. Most offensively are the voices of Paradise (who sounds like a stereotypical abominable guy from Mexico, a banditio if you will) and the main character himself, Dave Run.

Maybe I’m fair being too picky, but I simply cannot scrutinize this version of Trim Fuzz. I want the version I’m so familiar with, I want the US version! I will admit that the relate quality on this DVD is wonderful. I never opinion Elegant Fuzz could discover this salubrious. But I will probably never seek this version ever again, so all the relate quality in the world doesn’t really mean distinguished. There was some odd pseudo-bootleg version of Orderly Fuzz for sale on Amazon a year or so ago. I have that and although the report quality leaves a lot to be desired, at least the movie on it is actually Well-organized Fuzz and not Clean Snooper. If I were you, I’d hunt around for that version.
