Kurosawa's last undisputed masterpiece, "Ran" adapts "King Lear" (Shakespeare was Kurosawa's accepted writer) placing it during the 16th century in Japan. Like "Throne of Blood" (another Kurosawa classic that also adapts "Macbeth") "Ran" melds action with drama in a recent scheme that only Kurosawa was able to do. Determined there have been other directors that have made films about Japanese culture, Feudalism and the Samurai but none with the interested insight and profound notice into what makes a culture tick as well as Kurosawa.

Kurosawa had lost most of his collaborators prior to the shooting of "Ran". All of that informs the darkness and his identification for the main character. While Kurosawa freely borrowed from "King Lear", he also informed the film with many issues facing himself; he felt isolated from the Japanese filmmaking community and he was unappreciated in this unhurried phase of his career having to go to score financing (frequently going overseas to acquire it) . Kurosawa felt isolated and alone without his collaborators. The loss of his wife unprejudiced prior to shooting meant that Kurosawa threw his raging emotions into "Ran" using the epic of "Lear" as a means to quiz his occupy personal station.

A radiant, rich transfer from Criterion. There's few digital artifacts and there's virtually none of the issues that dogged the "Masterworks" edition of this film. The image isn't cropped (the "Masterworks" edition had the edge of the frame prick off) and the high definition transfer looks excellent with rich colors, noteworthy clarity and depth to the image. There is noticeable grain but that's allotment of the unique theatrical presentation of the film and not a surprise given that the film is 20 years archaic. The Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack has no noticeable distortion with nice depth and clarity for both the dialogue and the music.

Chris Marker's expedient documentary "AK" is included as portion of the package on the second disc. That by itself would also gain this worth repurchasing if you're in doubt about it. However, coupled with the terrific restoration and transfer done by Criterion here it makes this an well-known engage for fans of Kurosawa's films. We also come by an appreciation by director Sidney Lumet, an episode of Toho Masterworks on Kurosawa that's also quite top-notch (although I remove Marker's 74 runt documentary) . "It is Extraordinary to Produce" focuses exclusively on "Ran" while Marker's documentary is a better overview of the director. Criterion has also ragged Kurosawa's fresh sketches and paintings to gain sections of "Ran" as Kurosawa modern saw it prior to trusty production. Finally there's a unusual interview with lead actor Tasuya Kakadai. As usual Criterion has included an superb booklet that includes a very ample essay by film critic Michael Wilmington, a 1985 interview with Kurosawa about the making of the movie and a current interview with "Ran" composer Toru Takemitsu. This deluxe 2 disc edition makes the nonanamorphic previous edition search for almost like a videotape by comparison in terms of the overall quality.

Stephen Prince provides tantalizing background about Japanese culture and Kurosawa's film style. Prince's commentary is a bit dry coming across as a lecture that one might sit through at UCLA or USC and isn't all that inviting but it is quite informative. Personally, I would have preferred an interactive commentary with Prince discussing the film with, say, Lumet, Francis Ford Coppola or another well known film director.

This is an distinguished remove for fans of Kurosawa. Kurosawa's last story is, perhaps, his darkest and one of his most accomplished. The extras would form this worth purchasing by themselves but the glowing, rich high definition transfer makes this the best version of "Ran" that has ever appeared on home video. I highly recommend this film.

The "Ran: Masterworks Edition" DVD could have been mighty better, but was badly botched by the producer (Wellspring Media) .

By far the biggest predicament is the so-called "digital restoration," which consists of two things: running the whole movie through a miscalibrated digital denoising filter, and increasing the incompatibility and color saturation to cartoonish levels. The latter change can at least be undone at the playback slay, but the aged does irreparable injure to the image. Most of the image problems mentioned here by other reviewers are due to this "restoration," not to defects in the unusual transfer.

The wound from the digital denoising is severe and exhibit throughout the film. It's easily recognized with experience, or when the denoised image is shown next to the pristine unique. But since I don't have that luxury here, I'll unbiased mention some of the more easily seen symptoms. Clouds seem slightly unnatural, as if hand-painted, because their glorious wispiness is interpreted as noise and removed (leer for example 0:11:45 and 2:18:00) . Thin smart lines against dismal backgrounds "sparkle" or "twinkle" like stars; this is caused by cross-frame denoising, which misinterprets movement of titillating edges due to frame jitter or camera movement as transient noise (discover for example the sunray pattern in the Ichimonji crest beginning at around 0:04:30) . Fast-moving objects shrink or recede completely for brief intervals, again due to cross-frame denoising (stare for example Kyoami's legs as he runs, at around 0:09:15) .

The fresh _Metropolis (1927) _ DVD includes a restoration featurette which explains why computerized denoising was not veteran in the restoration of that film, and shows examples of some of the problems described above. And denoising was only considered for that film because the available prints were badly in need of restoration. _Ran_ does not need restoration, which makes this unnecessary distress all the more tragic.

Many DVDs released by Central Park Media have also been defaced in this arrangement, notably the recent two-disc edition of Takahata's _Grave of the Fireflies_. I judge the same company is responsible for all of these botched "restorations," since the modus operandi is always the same: moderate to severe denoising artifacts, grossly oversaturated colors, and a "restoration demo" comparing the restored version to a previous video release in a distinctive splitscreen format.

There are many other problems with this DVD, though they are minor in comparison to the above:

The modern transfer was apparently made from a theatrical print rather than a higher-fidelity interpositive, since it contains reel change marks (flashing unlit circles at the upper fair corner of the frame) . Surely such a attractive film deserves better than this.

There are several embarrassing mistakes in the subtitles which would have been caught by a human being, but not by a software spelling checker. Apparently the producers of this DVD labor under the delusion that proofreading, like restoration, can be done by computer.

The MPEG-2 encoding was done improperly, with the result that the image switches randomly between progressive (film) and interlaced (video) encodings, instead of remaining film throughout. This causes annoying random blurring and sharpening during playback on many DVD players, noticeable mainly in quiet scenes. (Seek for example the long shots of Hidetora starting around 0:50:00; please ticket that this predicament is not visible on all players.) Some players can be reconfigured to screen this jam (on software players settle "bob" rather than "weave" or "automatic"), but this will cleave the playback quality of properly-encoded DVDs.

Technical incompetence aside, this is not a awful disc. The subtitle translation is problematic, but I've seen worthy worse; I can't complain too distinguished here. What's lost in the translation is probably insignificant compared to cultural details which no translation could hope to elaborate. A short "production notes" extra fills in a few of those details but neglects others. Two plain trailers for the film are included. The "restoration demo" is first-rate for seething at in impotent nettle, and also for seeing how Kurosawa probably intended the film to appear, colorwise, before it was "enhanced" for this DVD.

There are two commentary tracks. One, by Stephen Prince, focuses on record technique and is clearly intended for students. It's quite wonderful. The other is by Peter Grilli, who was show on the region during share of the shooting of _Ran_; he talks about his experiences there and his opinions of Kurosawa and his work. Though sometimes arresting, Grilli's comments accomplish no sense as a commentary track since they're wholly unconnected to the action on camouflage. They should have been printed in a companion booklet.

The film itself is a masterpiece, of course; even the shoddiest technical treatment can't hide its emotional impact. I would have given it five stars but for the problems with the DVD.

This is the first non-Central Park Media DVD that I've seen to utilize this "digital restoration" process. I'm troubled that it will spread further. I hasten anyone concerned by this to write to Wellspring Media and content them that they could have produced a mighty better DVD, with less inconvenience, by simply omitting the "restoration" step. If you choose not to engage the disc for this reason, voice them that too.

So many of us remember seeing many of these vintage Popeye shorts when we were kids, and fondly remember the astounding animation from those early Fleischer Studios Popeye's. In 1933, the unique Popeye thunder was done by William Costello. Sometime in 1935 he was fired and The Sailor Man's explain was taken over by Jack Mercer, who kept at it for the remaining duration of these big cartoons. Remember that amazing muttering in those early years by Popeye? That was the astronomical Jack Mercer. Who could forget that fabulous "Is that so? " and all the other regular mutterings that Popeye would yell, more so especially during the Fleischer years. Bluto was astonishing, too, with some big back-and-forth quips between himself and his rival. His exclaim was delivered by William Pennell from 1933-1935, then Gus Wickie from 1935 until his death in 1938. The deny of Olive Oyl was delivered by Mae Questel.

So, all you Popeye fans... this is what we have been waiting for many a year. Throw out all your other Popeye videos and DVDs. Find rid of your VHS tapes that you made from the Cartoon Network. Ruin (with pleasure) all of those unfavorable colorized Popeye's made ghastly by Mr. Turner. Animation historian Jerry Beck says that "your eyes will POP at the restorations. If you've never seen them you are in for a revelation." At long last...the first official release of the Max Fleischer cartoons on DVD. Without a doubt, you will be absolutely, positively elated!!!

As a lifelong fan of classic animation, I simply could not be more THRILLED at the prospect of finally owning restored versions of the Fleischer Popeye cartoons. There has been, as long as I can take, a misconception about Popeye cartoons. I recently had this discussion with a sterling friend, who could not understand why I was so exasperated about this release. She, like so many people, was raised on the color Popeye cartoons made in the 1960's. "They're all the same," she complained. "Popeye and Bluto fight over Olive Oyl, and Popeye eats spinach and beats up his rival. Sizable deal." And you know something? Based solely on the cartoons my friend had seen, she was accurate. She knew nothing of these unique sunless & white gems made by the Fleischers beginning in the early 1930's. And while the recount of Popeye in most of those shorts is the same (Jack Mercer) as the later ones, that's where the similarities ruin. The early 'toons are tubby of creative gags, ad-libs and boundless energy. Plus, they have the inimitable Fleischer style, which can also be found in Betty Boop and, later, the first Superman cartoons.

I hope that those of you who only know Popeye from the later, bland incarnations will check out this place. Forget Poopdeck Pappy or Popeye's nephews (those these will eventually surface in the Fleischer versions) ; this is the Staunch POPEYE in all his elastic, mumbling glory.

Essential viewing for Popeye enthusiasts, and anyone involved in the early history of interesting sound cartoons.

P.S. I wish I could find abet all the money I've blown on cheapskate VHS and DVD versions by Goodtimes, etc. Those things are headed for a garage sale faster than you can say "I yam what I yam!"

The BBC has gone all out with this Dr. Who DVD state of Season 16 "The Key To Time". The expansive thing about these DVDs is that they all have commentary and Tom Baker himself has done commentary on half of them. This is grand compared to other expose DVD releases. How many Star Fling Episodes or Movies have commentary by any of the valid stars of the prove? (NONE) Here's a description of the stories and extras you'll fetch in this package...

The Ribos Operations- A beautiful righteous Robert Holms Account about greed for a principal mineral state in a medieval type culture.

Commentary by Tom Baker and Mary Tamm(Romana) . Text commentaries/trivia and photo galleries.

The Pirate Planet- This is the Gem of season 16. One fo the enormous Douglas Adams Dr. Whos. It's about a planet that continuously experiences economic boons whose native's never bother to expect why. The Doctor must face the extremely loud and boisterous Captain to glean the answers. Wonderfully comic dialogue and one of the few Whos that can beget the interest of non fans.

The Stones Of Blood- Another marvelous sage (from a dialogue perspective at least) . Satan worshippers pray to giant stones which can proceed across the countryside sucking the life out of people. There's even a decent slasher film type scene with a couple camping in the woods.

The Androids of Tara- A swashbuckling adventure about an alien civilization who's garb behold medieval but who also utilize android technology. Kind of comic but kind of fun.

The Power of Kroll- The worst one of the season. Laugh as the green painted swampies care for the giant latex Squid. Be warned... at any moment the giant rubber tentacle could reach and promenade someone away! Kind of like the gong indicate.

The Armageddon Factor- The final battle for the Key To Time. Can the Doctor defeat the mysterious Shadow? I always found the Shadow to be incredibly scary although it doesn't create up for the fact that they could've probably slice a half hour out of this.

Watching the Key to Time series in one part really fills in alot of blanks for those of us not fortunate to have seen enough Doctor Who episodes to acquire a sense of the whole. Not that you'll collect great of a history of the Time Lords or understand from this series alone why Doctor Who is on the adventure he is on, but it's smooth a broad set to launch, not to mention that this series contains two of my all-time well-liked Who episodes, The Pirate Planet and The Androids of Tara. The search for the Key is really unprejudiced a convenient excuse to send the Doctor off on a series-long adventure. Some of the episodes barely originate mention of the Key, while others focus on it more intently.

This series comes from the Tom Baker years, and shows both the scarcastic wit and the caring that made these years so current with viewers, especially in America, where Baker has been by far the well-liked of the doctors. These years also featured K-9, the robotic dog who has more personality than alot of the humans in the Doctor Who worlds and whose advance demise in the final episode is surprisingly fascinating. It also features the splendid Mary Tamm as Romana, the youngish time lord who is foisted on Doctor Who against his will but becomes his treasured companion. Tamm is fantastic, holding her hold wonderfully against Baker and managing to screech intelligence, beauty, humor and compassion consistently. Although you can read about each episode in more detail on the reviews for the individual episodes, here is my lickety-split rundown of each:

The Ribos Operation: 3 stars, not the most consuming Who episode, not the worst either. Introduces the White Guardian and Romana and sets up the search for the key, but is otherwise ravishing hasten of the mill. Nice hammy turns by the co-leads, one a tyrant out to rob a planet to expend as a staging post for reconquering his world, the other a con man trying to hustle him on the sale of the planet, a backwards world with religious symbols that peer awfully Catholic.

The Pirate Planet: 5 stars - very cheesy, very silly, very bright episode about one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever committed. One of the best Who episodes, written by the slow, sizable Douglas Adams of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" fame.

The Stones of Blood: 2 1/2 stars -- Worst episode of the bunch, a droll, slow-moving engage on Stonehenge and goddess-worshipping cults.

The Androids of Tara: 5 stars - Improbable episode that plays on "The Prisoner of Zenda." The Doctor and Romana derive caught on opposite sides in a battle for the throne of Tara. Another one of those stories in which one of the leads (Romana) is a humdrum ringer for a notable on the other world (legal down to the puny scar in the middle of her forehead) . Overlook that itsy-bitsy detail, though, and this one's a winner from the magnificent scenery and costumes to some of the best acting in a Who episode.

The Power of Kroll: 3 1/2 stars - not a mountainous episode, but aloof appealing. Anthropology stars here as one hurry risks exterminating another out of corporate greed, only to be foiled by a giant squid.

The Armageggdon Factor: 4 stars -- the longest episode (at six mini-episodes instead of the usual 4), and the wrapping up of the Key saga, takes set on a planet on the brink of annihilation following a nuclear war. Also introduces us to the princess whose shape Romana will recall when she undergoes her first transformation.

This series is both a must for serious collectors and a mountainous intro for the first-time Who viewer. It's not considerable to opinion these in order (for years I'd only seen two of them), but it's a nice treat if you can afford it.

Season 4 includes episodes that never aired in the USA. I am looking forward to the March release of season 5. This is unprejudiced a titanic mature amine that has mystery's for all ages. This series is 500+ episodes strong and detached going in japan and i hope they will continue to release them on DVD in the USA.

I like this series. Admire how Conan (aka Jimmy) solves the cases and tells how it was done.

I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.

Those reviewers who are stating that the science is unpleasant (or even "ridiculous") may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall conception is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be 'virtually impossible'.

Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to fill the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example - the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than impartial a 'sling-shot' exercise) .

His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a 'billionth of a second', or in 'the mind') is astonishing, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and apprehension many scientists beget for the universe. I contemplate some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it's not necessarily meant to be seen that map. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox's comment on its magnificence is intriguing.)

Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I contemplate these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also judge the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might objective be me.

All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and status than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to pick on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted noteworthy of the wonder and apprehension that those films did.

To anyone choosing to gaze this film on DVD, I'd recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox's commentary. In my notion his comments perform a really delightful film even better.
Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film "Sunshine." It is something you have never seen before. The film takes area in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth's last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to flee to the sun and open a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they salvage themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all.
Fans of other Danny Boyle's films will not be disappointed. His wonderful films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn't very strong for this round of Danny Boyle's film. And "Sunshine" only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre come me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in adore with it.
Overall "Sunshine" was a gigantic, broad, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a helpful movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed.

"Sunshine" uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a mountainous choice for the Fox Classic. This film has tall visuals, mainly scenes in outer situation. Without giving too grand away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was petrified about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the cover to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a huge job in transferring all the gigantic visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home.

"Sunshine" uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an proper choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar well-behaved. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an fabulous contrivance. Each scene in this film is memorable with the abet to John Murphy's soundtrack (OST) . The Blu-ray transfer is tremendous. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a microscopic disappointing but didn't affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to examine the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I peaceful belief on purchasing the "Sunshine" OST when it is released.

"Sunshine" features a novel Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to conception the film in PiP. The smaller shroud being the director commentaries and the main veil being the staunch movie. The PiP option allows you to switch relieve and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really judge that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust.
The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: "Dad's Boring," and "Mole Hills" which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer.
The High Definition Queer relate on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The "Enhanced Viewing Mode" which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc retract alone (Profile 1.1) . It also features a "Surround Sound Mixer" which you can purchase audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or catch your celebrated parts and achieve them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search explain index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the imprint.

"Sunshine" is my accepted movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can't gain all the High Definition convey on this disc and it is well worth the brand. Profile 1.1, also known as "Enhanced Viewing Mode" is a broad addition to Blu-ray disc and I absorb this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the ruin (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney) . I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must prefer. If I could rate this any higher I would.
Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

This is the first of five "Dirty Harry" films in which Eastwood stars as a San Francisco police detective. By the time the last appeared (The Dull Pool, in 1988), Eastwood had frail and times had changed but Callahan's values and methods remained essentially the same. When initially released, Dirty Harry was immediately controversial as was Death Wish (1974) . Audiences tended to be divided between those who were offended by what they considered to be excessive violence and those who (like Harry Callahan and Paul Kersey) had lost confidence in society's willingness and/or ability to acknowledge effectively to violent crime. After seeing each of the two films for the first time, I vividly rob joining those around me in the theatre as they rose and cheered...and continue to applaud for several minutes. I asked myself, "What's going on here? What's this all about? "

At least in the larger U.S. cities 30 years ago, residents had become totally fed up with old law enforcement initiatives. It was no longer noble to hurry the streets at night. Even more perilous to do so in public parks. Homes were robbed while people worked during the day. Many of the same homes were robbed again later after insurance coverage replaced the articles previously stolen. Racial animosities, drug abuse, and a widespread contempt for institutional authority all contributed to such problems.

Under Don Siegel's crisp direction, Eastwood and his associates in the cast bring R.M. Fink's screenplay to life (and yes, to death) as they focus on what is obviously an irreconcilable conflict between Callahan and his superiors who include the mayor of San Francisco. Callahan's motto seems to be "Whatever it takes." In some situations, it may bewitch his 44 Magnum, "the most worthy handgun in the world." Callahan has not totally lost faith in his society nor in the importance of the just system. However, he does feel betrayed. The mayor and even Lieutenant Bressler (Harry Guardino) objective don't "net it." This is precisely the same point Jim Malone (Sean Connery) makes to Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) in The Untouchables 26 years later: When orthodox ("by the book") crime-fighting strategies and tactics don't succeed, exercise others even if they are not (at least technically) right. Countless other films (such as Magnum Force, The French Connection, and L.A. Confidential) also invent the same point.

It is notable to remember when seeing this film again, as I did recently, that it portrays elements of an urban society few of us ever experience. Also, that it is a drama, not a documentary. Its critical purpose is to explain a tale. The status focuses on a serial killer named "Scorpio" (Andy Robinson) whom Callahan is sure to eliminate. Even when he eventually does so, questions remain. Don't criminals also have rights? What would happen if all or most other detectives followed Callahan's example? To what extent (if any) should private citizens also be actively interested in law enforcement? I agree with several critics who claim that, with Dirty Harry, Siegel and Eastwood created a recent film genre. Its influence proved to be ample. Each viewer must resolve for herself or himself how distinguished social relevance it has retained after 32 years but almost everyone would agree that it has lost limited of its entertainment value.

Dirty Harry is directed by Don Siegel. The film stars Clint Eastwood, Harry Guardino, John Larch, Andy Robinson, Rene Santoni, and John Vernon. It's the first of five films in the Dirty Harry series. The movie was originally released in 1971, and this is the third DVD release of the film.

A deadly sniper calling himself "Scorpio" has committed a slay in San Francisco, and essentially now holds the city hostage, swearing to demolish again unless a hefty ransom is paid. A tough-as-nails police inspector, Harry Callahan, hunts down and apprehends the villain - only to have him released on correct technicalities, despite the murders he has committed. This infuriates Callahan, who knows the villain will strike again - and he's certain to halt him by any means valuable.

Dirty Harry is a classic, no doubt about it. Clint Eastwood had proven time and time again he was a genius when it came to acting in Westerns, and this is the movie that showed the world he could fare equally well in a latter-day action setting. In many ways this is the role that defined his career - so mighty so that it spawned four sequels spanning a decade and a half. The political themes of the film are peaceful relevant and hotly debated today, which only adds to the experience. Regardless of your taste in movies, Dirty Harry is a film you must peep at least once before you die.

As far as the image/sound quality goes, Warner Bros. has "gone ahead and made my day" with these original transfers for the series.

This is it - the best the Dirty Harry series has EVER looked on home video. Warner has given the film the mastering it has so desperately needed for so long, and the results reveal through and through. It's been nearly four decades since the film hit theaters, so I'm amazed at how mighty they were able to do with the image. This transfer has to be seen in action to be appreciated.

The sound quality holds up impartial as well as the image. Be it dialogue, the original musical scoring from the always-brilliant Lalo Schifrin, or the gunshots from Harry's 44, everything unprejudiced sounds sizable. Like the visual transfer, the audio also needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

Warner Bros. has released Dirty Harry 3 times on DVD. The first release was a very bare-bones release with no bonus material. The second had a few minor featurettes but was collected fairly cramped in terms of what it offered - both earlier releases were single disc. Whoever was in charge of this latest reissue must have asked themselves, "do I feel lucky? "

Well, I guess they DID feel lucky. This is a two-disc area LOADED with special features. Every earlier release of Dirty Harry on DVD has been a disappointment, but the third time really is the charm for Dirty Harry on DVD. Here's a discover at what you'll be getting in this set:

-Commentary with Richard Schickel: Schickel is a Clint Eastwood biographer who is no stranger to the man's work. And he serves up a gigantic commentary here. He goes beyond Eastwood, and even discusses director Don Siegel, as well as what kind of a movie he was trying to form, and how he worked with the film's star. And perhaps most importantly, Schickel isn't above kicking serve and enjoying the movie once in a while. I wanted commentary with Clint Eastwood himself (as I'm determined many fans did), but this is, unquestionably, the next best thing.

-"Dirty Harry: The Modern" featurette: This featurette runs for half an hour and is hosted by Robert Urich. A number of people around San Francisco (where the movie was filmed and based) are interviewed throughout its duration. While it's not too in-depth (you probably won't learn anything original here if you're a Dirty Harry maniac), it's serene a fun extra to see if you're a fan.

-"Dirty Harry's Method": Despite its under-10-minute length, this was one of my celebrated bonus features in the region. It's a vintage promo fraction, shot benefit when the movie was filming. You win to seek a young Eastwood and Siegel doing what they do best, on both sides of the camera.

-Interview Gallery: Essentially, this is half an hour of snippets from various interviews recorded over the years, that are in some intention or another related to the film or Eastwood himself. It's always inspiring to hear what the various interviewees have to say about the film and/or its star, which will design this featurette all the more enchanting to fans of the series

-Trailer Gallery: Trailers for all five Dirty Harry films. Enough said.

-The Long Shadow of Dirty Harry: This is a ticket modern featurette recorded unprejudiced for this release. This is various discussions about the character, the film, the star, and more. Running at around half an hour, it's a tall featurette no Dirty Harry fan should overlook.

-Clint Eastwood: The Man from Malpaso: The final featurette on this disc runs an hour, and goes beyond Dirty Harry. Instead it focuses on Eastwood himself, from birth to the then-present (this featurette came out in the early 90s, so it only covers up to around the time Unforgiven was released.) Fans of Clint Eastwood will cherish this featurette. Chances are if you're a fan, you may have seen the special encourage when it first aired on TV.

Finally, Dirty Harry gets a obliging DVD release. Spacious record quality and a ton of big bonus features top off what is truly a classic film. If you're a fan of the film, even if you already bought one of the earlier DVD releases, Derive THIS VERSION. It's that noteworthy of an improvement.

Video is featured in widescreen. Swardson's comedy routine is well-lighted and although backgrounds are kept simple, the first-rate thing thing is that the comedy does display quite a bit of audience reaction with top-notch shots at the audience. Camera angles are either stop up, body shot, at various positions towards the audience and blueprint up high above the audience. Editing is well-done. Not dizzying at all. Camera angle stays on the comedian for most of the time.

Audio is featured in Dolby Digital. I opted to have my receiver place at stereo on all channels in order to have the audio all around me. But audio is understandable and obvious. Audience laughter is also quite certain and doesn't disturb Swardson's performance.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Nick Swardson's comedy DVD "Seriously, Who Farted? " definitely showcases the comedian's adore for beer and alcohol. He loves it, repeats it and his comedy routine definitely works. Especially for the audience who go crazy when he talks about alcohol or drugs. College humor at its finest, I have to admit that I was so mature to seeing Swardson on film and television that I never really seen his comedy routine. I knew he was a laughable guy but I didn't know he was a comedian.

But watching "Seriously, Who Farted? ", I couldn't attend but laugh repeatedly. His comedy is definitely understandable and can be easily appreciated by those familiar with the topics he discusses and the fact that he uses sure situations that arrive a young crowd, discussions of XBOX 360 or Nintendo Wii is one thing, but for audiences who have been in a drunk stupor, are familiar with pot brownies, Asian massage parlors, UFC, ninjas and can laugh quite easily at monkeys, definitely will gain Swardson's comedy DVD to be quite fun and refreshing.

Sure, there are many drunk comedians but Swardson's comedy is quite hilarious because he's like the guy next door, the guy you went to college with, the guy you partied with... And I assume what makes him so different from other comedians is the wacky roles he plays on films such as the overjoyed skater in "Reno 911, the guy who lives at home and never has success with women in "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" or the Dance Dance Revolution gamer in "Grandma's Boy". Supporting roles that are impartial hilarious to spy and Swardson himself is unbiased a comic comedian that will definitely accomplish you laugh, pee in your pants or execute you feel that you're going to bust a gut. It's that hilarious!

As for a Comedy Central DVD, you accept the obliging camera angles but it would have been extra nice if this DVD release had been given the treatment of an audio CD (like Comedy Central's Russell Peters DVD release) because this is the kind of comedy that you would want to listen to in long commutes.

Overall, Swardson's "Seriously, Who Farted? " is a hilarious comedy DVD worth checking out!
I read a review earlier where Swardson was called a hack and I felt I needed to apologize to that reviewer to a positive extent. The reviewer called Swardson a hack and kind of have to agree that some of the stuff on this Dvd ive def seen done by other comedians(Pablo Francisco) . I cringed when i saw the similarities as i am a ample Swardson fan, but he totally ripped off Pablo on a few of these bits... On top of that, a lot of the jokes were not the LOL amusing ive near to demand from Lop. There are 2 or 3 bits in the Dvd that are really hilarious but most of the stuff on the dvd unprejudiced wearisome bomb. Maybe its unbiased me Idk... I hope his next special has the kind of material Swardson is advantageous of producing.

For anyone who simply wants to know if this is the novel theatrical version, like myself--it's not. It's the same as the 10th Anniversary Edition, with the stuff from the cutting room floor thrown aid into the movie, instead of in Bonus Features where it belongs. I'm so thankful I aloof have the oringinal release that I treasure on video.

There are a couple of reasons why you may want to go with this "Special" edition of this charming and very new update of the classic "Cinderella" yarn. The first is that at this time, the fresh edition seems to be unavailable, except from the outside sellers with prices higher then this one. The second reason is the astonishing music video with Natalie Cole doing one of the best songs from the film, "Wild Women Do". Other then that, I did not win anything really "special" about this "special" edition.

Here's what you gain...A "Slow the Scenes" featurette, which runs a couple of minutes and is unbiased some footage of Geer, Roberts and Marshall, getting ready to shoot a scene at the Polo game with the "Pleasing Woman" music playing in the background. There is a very short production featurette, and except for Garry Marshall telling us what the film is about, appeared to be nothing considerable more than a long trailer. There is also the option of Director commentary, which may be viewed during the film, and the film is in widescreen, but both of these features are also available on the novel release.

There is also some extra footage. An added scene where Vivian takes Edward abet to her stomping grounds so she can check on Kit, and the two are confronted by drug dealers hardly seemed essential. As a matter of fact it seemed to detract from the legend, as it too soon takes the audience succor out Vivian's fairy anecdote world we have entered briefly.

As far as the film itself, I serene like it 15 years after it's fresh release. Wonderfully directed by Garry Marshall, it's a feel satisfactory film, and a improbable appreciate sage that makes you feel you can fulfill your dreams. A gargantuan soundtrack, and the kindly cast including Laura San Giacomo(she was a sizable Kit), Jason Alexander, Hector Elizondo, Elinor Donahue, and narrative Ralph Bellamy, all beget this a very special film all on it's hold.

The DVD presents a very nice narrate in widescreen, and reliable sound in Dolby surround. There are nice captions in English for those needing them, but no other subtitles. The trace is actually pleasing decent for a "special" edition, unbiased don't pick it expecting a ton of extra goodies.

You'd judge a Las Vegas cab driver had seen it all, especially with that UFO convention in town, true? Almost factual, until two solemn children exhibit up in his car. They have a wad of cash that they don't seem to understand very well, an urgent need to arrive some desert destination, and a schoolbook scheme of speaking. It seems as accurate as anything in Las Vegas and the money's green, so they're off.

So, a moment later, are the government goons in their shadowy SUVs, in hot pursuit. The kids turn out to be something dazzling special. The broad poor gov guy calls them "illegal aliens," without stating honest which laws they broke or fair how alien. Then the hobble is on with a few extras thrown in, like a killer robot and the only UFOlogist in the world who actually has a clue.

There's plenty of action, a bit of bloodless violence, some ominous but ambiguous threats against the kids, and a dependable stream of one-liners to hold the mood from getting too grim. Maybe this isn't one for the ages, but it provides some popcorn entertainment where no one gets killed and everyone keeps their clothes on. Be Pleased!

Jack Bruno (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is a cab driver. He has a shady past but is trying to save all that leisurely him. It's time for the annual science fiction convention in Las Vegas, which means his cab is filled with weirdos, including Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), one of the speakers.

Yet the pains comes in the forms of two teenagers. Seth (Alexander Ludwig) and Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) appear in his cab at the originate of one shift. They offer him a wad of cash and ask to be taken to an undisclosed area. When they advance, Jack discovers it is an abandoned cabin in the middle of the nowhere. Not wanting to leave them alone, he discovers something he never imagined. Is he in over his head? Can he befriend Seth and Sara complete their mission?

I hadn't watched the originals growing up, but I did seek them earlier this year to prepare for this one hitting theaters. It turns out it really didn't matter. They could have slapped any name on this and it would have been unbiased as delicious. That's not saying they didn't answer their roots. Fresh Witch Mountain kids Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann originate cameos in a diner scene as Tina and Anthony. There are another couple fun nods to the modern.

The movie got going radiant swiftly and only increased in intensity from there. Our heroes have several different groups hunting them, so there is never a tiresome moments. Yet the funny moments are plentiful as well, especially any time Garry Marshall is around as a science fiction writer. And the movie made me truly care for these characters.

The special effects were impressive with several truly mouth dropping moments. The preview attractive great gave those away, but I serene loved them. There is plenty of action and stunts, too, which are probably what earned the movie its PG rating. It is intense at times, so kids who frighten easily should steer certain. Every one will devour it.

I do have two minor gripes about the movie. The first is a scene that preaches to us about global warming. It feels a diminutive out of spot and gratuitous instead of a sincere portion of the film. Secondly, a sub-plot about Jack's past coming wait on to earn him is dropped reach the ruin.

Just so you know, there are a few scenes during the credits you'll want to bag.

Despite the dropped station point, I had a smile on my face when the movie was over. In fact, I was kind of surprised at fair how noteworthy I enjoyed it. If you are at all enthusiastic in seeing it, do. You'll have a salubrious time with an appetizing movie.

Yet another win from classic 1970s blaxploitation. It's definitely not Dolemite, but it had enough action to sustain me occupied for all 96 minutes. This one's hard to collect in regular video stores. Amazon is about the only position I know that even carries this film. A big addition!

Here's a reduce of '70s Blaxpoitation cheese that manages to pack a sizeable wallop for its miniscule budget. Tough African-American detective Kicks Carter (Timothy Brown) is out to smash up a pair of bottom-feeder crooks and cessation a guns-for-drugs trade organized by a sunless mobster improbably named Guido. Along the diagram there's plenty of clumsily choreographed (and often poorly-lit) fight scenes and shoot-outs, a smattering of sex and nudity (like when Kicks makes sweet appreciate to his TV reporter girlfriend Tanya Boyd), a handsome amount of sleaze (like when a woman with a gambling spot is gang-raped by four sweaty redneck card sharps; the fact that this woman resembles a young version of "That '70s Expose"'s Debra Jo Rupp only adds to the scene's nastiness) and stilted dialog so awkwardly peppered with jive talk it's definite the script was written by white people. Level-headed, schlock director Al Adamson is in peak acquire with this one, keeping the action exciting and making obvious to hit all the apt buttons to please his audience--even including a tiny bit of lesbian action, again appealing our hapless gambling addict. The cast also includes Adamson regulars Russ Tamblyn (who plays a bug-eyed, low-rent mobster named Ziggy) and aging blond bombshell (and Adamson's wife) Regina Carrol. The movie runs out of steam by the final ten minutes, but all in all, "Dark Heat" is radiant hot. Impartial don't be fooled by the updated veil art on the DVD: "Dismal Heat" is a '70s movie through and through, from Timothy Brown's immense afro down to his crotch-molding, (...) tight jeans.

The series from the storyline factual down to the DVD menu is spectacular. However, I like collecting the box sets and was looking forward to what this one had to offer. Sadly I was skittish to gaze I got a paperboard sleeve with a single DVD case and a manga book inside. I figured a runt edition would advance with more. The previous box sets came with two DVD cases, a manga book, audio episode, and a soundtrack. This review is solely about the box place and not about the series. I hope others will capture the time to seek what a grand storyline this series has to offer. I was objective disappointed in the overall box place of the R2 Fragment 1 Exiguous Edition.

The artwork on the packaging was very well do. The series was very scrumptious. The dvd extras were so-so. The dvd extras for the new series were remarkable better. The only bonus that came with the itsy-bitsy edition was volume 4 of the Code Geass manga. Considering the bonus items included with the slight edition versions of the unique series, this is really kind of lame. Detached, it is cheaper to acquire the dinky edition with the manga, than to lift the standard edition and the manga by themselves.

After seeing this movie for the first time since its 3D release in 1953, it makes one wonder why MGM insists on holding up "Singin' in the Rain" (a immense treat in itself) as its best musical. KISS ME KATE is simply astounding -- tight, comical, lickety-split, brilliant, plump of the dry wit and wisdom of Cole Porter, and gloriously "musical". To the crew's credit, many lines are straight from Shakespeare's unusual and the cast's readings are as adroit as any from Ancient Vic, anywhere, any time. Hermes Pan's and Bob Fosse's dance numbers are so sizzling genuine you can't buy your eyes off the performance. It's a must-have for dance fans. For comedy fans, the offstage antics that mirror the onstage situations are a fiendishly clever conceit. Only one regret: the new 3D photography was terrific, with perhaps the most colorful color work of 50's vintage. It's a bit subdued in novel prints. But don't let that deter you from enjoying this enchanting, literate, nearly perfect gem. Others have mentioned some of the more famed musical bits, but pay attention to Howard Keel's radiant comedic reading of "The Life That Once I Led" (which drew gleeful applause when I saw it in a Current York cinema recently), and Miss Grayson's rendition of "I Detest Men", copied by every lady who's tried it since 1953. Ann Miller's dance numbers are easily her very best work, by far -- and her "Too Darn Hot" was, at the time, almost too darn hot. Add worn George Sindey's directorial expertise (The Harvey Girls, Scaramouche, etc.) and Shakespeare's maintain genius, and this becomes *THE* demonstrate for people who say they don't like musicals!

Unfortunately the same can't be said for Warner Home Video's plain looking transfer. Colors are muted, at time appearing bleached or, at the very least, obsolete. The musical obtain is well represented.

Extras: Another all too short featurette on Cole Porter and the making of this movie - this one hosted by Ann Miller, but also featuring snippets from Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Tommy Rall and James Whitmore. A theatrical trailer and isolated music track are also marvelous of mention.

This 1994 film was adapted from a play by Argentinean playwright Ariel Dorfman and was directed by Roman Polanski. Situation in an unnamed South American country, three people are thrown together in an isolated house on a sunless and stormy night. The woman, played by Sigourney Weaver is clearly apprehensive and black. Her husband, played by Stuart Wilson, is behind for dinner. Turns out he had a flat tire and a stranger helped him out. That stranger, who is a doctor, played by Ben Kingsley, soon befriends the husband. The woman thinks the stranger is the man who tortured her while she was a political prisoner many years before.

There is a novel kinder and gentler government now, which is investigating atrocities from the past. The woman's husband is in charge of the investigation, which is basically focused on identifying bodies and is giving amnesty to many of the worst criminals. Naturally this complicates the plot.

What follows is not a simple account though because, throughout, questions are raised that have no easy answers. Is the doctor really the torturer or an innocent man? After all, it all happened at least ten or more years in the past and the woman has never actually seen her torturer's face as she had been blindfolded the whole time. The doctor declares his innocence. At times, he's even charming. But she has tied him up and is positive to win a confession out of him.

There are many interwoven themes. The basic one is wondering if the doctor is, indeed, the legal man. But then there is the relationship between the husband and the wife. We peer he and his wife were both members of the revolution but only she was caught and tortured. He has been trying to get that up to her for their whole marriage. We also accept to hear a lot about the details of the torture. It is chilling and disturbing and, even though the only violence in the film is against the suspect who is tied up, the woman's prison experience, which is only talked about and not shown, is excruciatingly painful to hear about.

There are other questions raised too. What happens to a society when it gives someone power over a helpless person? Now, we glance the woman with power over the tied-up doctor. And we are forced to contemplate about how this kind of power corrupts a whole society. This is a opinion that is universal, as novel today as it has always been. And the director certainly knows how to bring it out. All of the actors were sensational. I soon forgot they were performing and was completely swept into the tale. I could feel the wound of all three characters as well as the dread of the electric shocks of the past.

The title comes from a string quartet by Franz Schubert called Death and the Maiden. This section of music had been played during the woman's torture. She has found a tape of it in the doctor's car and plays it throughout. It helps to frame the action, correct down to the film's splendid and satisfying conclusion.

I was surprised to inspect that this film had won no famous awards and got miniature recognition when it was released. It wasn't even given a high rating from the critics. That's too poor. This is an incredibly suspenseful legend. I was intending to build it on quit to come by something to eat but I got too fervent in the movie. There is only three people in this film and two scene places, the house and their property. But despite the minimalism it's a riveting residence. If you view it, I doubt if you will be disappointed.

What is it about French films that makes the best of them so deeply reflective in a device that few American and British films attain? Beautifully filmed, brilliantly acted, and underpinned by a qualified soundtrack, the film explores "genuine" peoples' lives slowly and above all subtly. Not a titanic deal happens, and there are no conclusions to the stories alive to - a guy gets diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition, another chap falls in admire with one of his students, a lonely single mother and a market stall trader are hesitantly drawn together, and an African dreams of getting to Paris to inaugurate a modern life. That's about it really. But it's the device that this is all place together & explored that makes the film, and which achieves its honest of trying to catch what Paris is to people who live there or dream of living there - which of course means that its infused with their, often vague, hopes & fears and it has no obvious & neat "Hollywood style" endings... life's not like that.

At times comic, at times charming, and ultimately quite fascinating, Klapisch directs the film without reverting to heavy-handed sentimentality or high drama to effect his points.... in fact, exactly the opposite: eye the fleeting, beautifully poignant shot at the ruin of the film as the African compares the conception on the postcard of Paris that has driven him to earn his slither there, and which underpins his hopes for the future, with the reality of it... nothing more needs to be said or filmed to choose what he must be feeling.

Perhaps the greatest credit to "Paris" is that, even though it's two hours long, subtitled (which is never the easiest blueprint to recognize a film), and devoid of any clever location twists or unexpected surprises to bear your attention, by the demolish of it all... you really don't want it to raze. PARIS is a kaleidoscopic understanding of that vast City of Light inhabited with a variety of individuals each of whom is consumed with life and cherish and living and dying. Cédric Klapisch has written and directed this richly populated canvas as a background of a tender record of a Moulin Rouge male dancer Pierre (Romain Duris) who is diagnosed with a terminal heart disease requiring transplantation if he is to survive. But in the waste the many characters introduced in 'incidental stories' have become so exciting that, instead of providing simply a background for Pierre's portrait, they become an integral fraction of the drama as well as indelibly stamped on the viewer's mind.

Pierre has kept his illness secret, yet when faced with the dire understanding of a transplant he confides in his sister Élise (Juliette Binoche), a single mother of three, who takes him in to own his expressionless days of self confinement. There is a palpable magic between the two as Élise attempts to bring Pierre out into the world of hope and of living. Incidental to her life are trips to the market where she observes the lives of the grocers and discovers their private lifestyles, information shared freely with the viewer. A Parisian North African communicates with his brother at home with a postcard of Paris, seducing the brother to doughty all odds to reach to the city. We also meet a jaded art historian Roland Verneuil (Fabrice Luchini) whose father has honest died, an event that devastates his emotional brother Philippe (François Cluzet) : Roland proceeds to have an affair with a student but his physical awakening is abruptly altered by the realities of Parisian life while Philippe progresses through his seemingly mundane existence toward a surprise ending. The grocers spy adventures with a group of girls among whom is the ex-wife of one of the men and in the process we eye the varying reactions of interpersonal relationships tested away from the eyes of group participation. All of these stories are white noise to Pierre's set, and though Élise is able to manufacture Pierre 'dance again' at a party of his fellow dancers she organizes, in the ruin Pierre is left to care for Élise's children while Élise finally opens her frozen heart to a modern romance. At this point Pierre receives the inevitable telephone call that a transplant is ready, and as he proceeds to the hospital he opens his mind to the beauties of Paris. Some of the vignettes we have observed are completed while most simply continue - fair like life in the ravishing city so often considered the city of fancy.

All of the many roles are enacted by gifted actors, the cinematography offers us a different opinion of Paris than that of postcards and proceed brochures, and the musical find ranges from celebrated music to the haunting 'Gnossiemme No. 1' of Erik Satie which is Pierre's theme music. At times the viewer feels lost in the complex overlay of the many stories being told, but settling encourage in a chair and objective inspiring the film results in an evening of Parisian intoxication. Otto Preminger's "Angel Face" has always had a special region in my heart. Preminger, as a filmmaker, is certainly noteworthy--but aside from a few films (including "Laura" and "Anatomy of a Slay"), he isn't one of my particular favorites. I don't know--to me, he was more of a technician than an artist. He made pleasurable films, in general, but doesn't have the appeal of some of the other "huge name" directors. I like "Angel Face," however, blooming distinguished for one reason--Jean Simmons. Simmons, I bear, is one of our most underrated actresses. She has played the lead in some very high profile and versatile films, including the scathing "Elmer Gantry," the fable "Spartacus," the terrific musical "Guys and Dolls," and Olivier's "Hamlet." Relegated to mostly TV roles for the last few decades, I wish her film legacy was more widely appreciated. "Angel Face" is particularly grand in her film oeuvre because it gives her the rare opportunity to play a femme fatale type.

Robert Mitchum, playing an ambulance driver, responds to call gripping a wealthy matriarch. It seems as if Mrs. Tremayne has been mysteriously poisoned by gas. Upon his visit, he meets Mrs. Tremayne's freeloading husband and her stepdaughter--played with haughty playfulness by Simmons. Infatuated with the young beauty, he soon falls under her spell and actually starts to work for the estate as the chauffeur. Relinquishing a frail relationship and financial independence, he becomes more and more fervent in the family dynamic playing out in the mansion. It soon becomes apparent that not all is as it seems and a psychological thriller, of sorts, starts to gain.

Essentially, while "Angel Face" is structured as a primitive noir--it can also be judged as an effective character peep. From the haunting music, the sunless stretches of mansion, the wistful stares from rain-streaked windows--the mood and atmosphere save a familiar ambiance. But pitting the tough guy persona of Mitchum against the emotional aloofness of Simmons, we scrutinize two positive and animated personalities. Simmons, with her doll-like features and regal manner, is really what distinguishes this describe. With a more typical noir leading lady, "Angel Face" would not be nearly as effective. Simmons' playing against type adds to the suspense and mystery--it's almost as if we are lured (along with Mitchum) deeper into the epic due to our expectations connected to Simmons as an actress.

Angel Face was directed in 1952 by: Otto Preminger (Laura, 1944; Anatomy Of A Execute, 1959) . Otto Preminger's `Laura' is now rightly regarded as one of large film noir masterpieces, however he made some less appreciated noirs like Fallen Angel (1945) ; Whirlpool (1949) ; Where The Sidewalk Ends (1950) and this film Angel Face. Upon it's release critics and public alike had seen perhaps far too many of this type of film hence the negative reviews. However I feel that this film is deserving of some rehabilitation. The theme is a familiar one of the Femme Fatale attempting to find some chump to encourage in a kill. Angel Face is slightly different in that the Femme Fatale's (performed by Jean Simmons (Tremendous Expectations, 1946; Hamlet, 1948; The Dusky Narcissus, 1947) ) motivation is not the standard killing for money but for esteem. This makes it similar to the Ellen Berent character played by Gene Tierney in `Leave Her To Heaven' (1946, John M. Stahl) . Generally in noir's guys destroy for the girl and girls for the money. Robert Mitchum (Out Of The Past, 1947; Crossfire, 1947; Night Of The Hunter, 1955) gives a unbelievable performance of a guy who is not so tiresome as to net suck into her trap. He also has some substantial dialogue that one wish's they could always have at hand to sigh in those situations. Along with Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster, Mitchum has to atrocious as one of the sizable noir actors. Cinematography was by Harry Stradling (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951; Johnny Guitar, 1954; A Face In The Crowd, 1957)

This DVD comes with a unbelievable audio commentary by Eddie Muller and is well worth a listen. In 1964 Jean-Luc Godard placed this film at no. 8 in his list of the greatest American films of the sound era. That alone should be righteous enough reason to investigate this film. It also has one of the titanic endings.

No Blueprint, 'State of Play, the BBC miniseries was the best series I have seen since 'Wired'. No Draw, was the American version going to be as suited. I was true, it is not as pleasurable, but Almost!

Russell Crowe as Cal McCaffrey, the mature time journalist who works for truth and justice, brings that justice to this film, like no one else could. He makes this film what it is. Rachel McAdams, as the Capitol Hill blogger, is pretty in her role, but it could have been anyone. Helen Mirren, as the editor of this blooming paper, is ruthless and mean and splendid, as is her wont. But, it was Russell Crowe who made this film spicy. The dirty long hair flowing as he walked and ran down corridors. The paunch from eating all those like a flash food meals and drinking the Irish wine, Scotch. Yep, this was the dependable deal, the newsmen of yesteryear.

The aide to Congressman, Stephen Collins, played by Ben Affleck, dies suddenly, an accident or suicide or was it slay? Cal and his newspaper blogger, Dela, commence snooping and accumulate that one and one don't build two, it adds up to five. Four murders and an investigation into a security group that hopes to control the world. As time moves on and clues commence to near together and stories unravel, we have a mercurial paced mystery, here. It is stout of suspense and intrigue and impartial when we consider we know who done it, the circle moves. That Russell Crowe, he could be one of the best actors around, you know that?

I purchased this for my son's third birthday. He is absolutely crazy about superheros but most of the current superhero cartoons are too violent. This point to has all the superheros and is perfect for children young and old--we have had kids from 3-10 explore it and savor it. I highly recommend it!

**About the forced commercials on Disc One: On my DVD remote I merely pressed the >>I (next) button and skipped them one by one, it takes a couple of seconds but is able to be bypassed by my player. Hitting the MENU or FF won't do the trick though. This is when the series (almost) begins for me. I like the first season don't rep me gross (4 stars), but they seemed to try a bit too hard with the accents and the characters were unbiased finding themselves, but I guess that's the intention it's supposed to be. Then in Season 2 they ease the accents, the characters launch to execute and all is almost there. This season has many more episodes I believe "classic" or "advance classic" but we are not quite up to the Helen Crump "era" and to me THAT is the Andy I appreciate.

Solid, solid, solid. I found many of my current episodes here and with this series in general center around Barney, many but not all. In later seasons, Gomer and Goober came along to own some of the spaces but early on most of the humor fell onto Don Knotts who amply filled this status. Only a handful of the episodes in Season Two were flat or were over-wrought like the Alan Hale "Farmer" ep. or the unquestionably unlikely "Guest of Honor" episode. Aloof, to say this is a must have is an understatement as it is so nice to glance the TAGS (30-45 second conclusions) of so many of these episodes that were long ago lop to sell you more of what you didn't need, not to mention the packaging which once again is objective perfect. I could have done without the commercials on Disc One, but Paramount is a business I guess and as far as extra's the promo "ads" are "intelligent" but repetitive.

Just remember, when Season 3 hits is when this series hits fleshy steam, so buckle up!! "That's CRUMP! C-R-U-M-P!"-Helen
The Andy Griffith Indicate, of course, is one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. While, I do not believe most of the season 2 episodes are arrive their best, almost anything from this classic series (not including Mayberry RFD) is worth owning. Season 2 does offer Andy Griffith's favorite: The Scrape Legend. Here is a brief summary of the 30+ episodes in this season:

Opie & the Bully: A tough kid keeps taking Opie's milk money. Andy helps Opie valiant taking a punch to the sight with sterling humor (with a miniature patriotism thrown in for generous measure) . A diminutive sugary.
Barney's Replacement: Barney thinks Andy is grooming anew man (Bob Rogers played by Tag Miller) to replace him as deputy.
Andy & the Woman Speeder: A attractive and charming gigantic city lady (played by Jean Hagen) gets a speeding tag and thinks she can outsmart the shrimp town sheriff.
Mayberry Goes Bankrupt: The town people are disquieted when they come by out they owe the downtrodden resident with the eye-sore shack a ton of money.
Barney on the Rebound: A gorgeous young con artist and her husband try to swindle Barney in a breech of promise suit. Highlight: Barney giving the young, female stranger a police escort to the post office (unprejudiced across the street) in front of a jealous Thelma Lou.
Opie's Hobo Friend: A ne'er-do-well vagrant played by Buddy Ebsen is a abominable influence on Opie.

Crime-Free Mayberry: Andy and Barney are honored for achieving the lowest crime rate in the nation. Meanwhile, the Mayberry bank is being burgled.
The Perfect Female: Thelma Lou tries to status Andy up with her cousin-a champion skeet shooter.
Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter: Aunt Bee falls for a traveling handyman and customary codger Henry Wheeler. Andy steps in before Aunt Bee gets harm.
The Clubmen: Andy and Barney are guests at a meeting of the Esquire club, but only one of them is invited to join. One of the many cases where Andy does practically anything to spare his friend's feelings.
The Quandary Story: This episode is Andy Griffith's celebrated. Aunt Bee is twisted on beating Clara in a homemade spot contest, but her family is disturbed to scream her they taste like kerosene.
Sheriff Barney: Barney gets an offer to become the sheriff of Greendale, so Andy lets Barney be sheriff of Mayberry so he will bag a taste of what it is like.

The Farmer Takes a Wife: Farmer Jeff Pruitt comes to town in search of a bride and descend for Thelma Lou (distinguished to Barney's chagrin) .
Keeper of the Flame: The meeting plot of Opie's secret club burns down.

A Medal for Opie: Opie is confident he will salvage a medal for a urge. When he loses, Andy must recount him a lesson in sportsmanship.
Barney and the Choir: Barney can't lisp a lick [but no one dares state him]. Andy solves the predicament by convincing Barney he will instruct his solo in a trim sensitive microphone that he blast his grunt unless he sings below a shriek.
Guest of Honor: The folks of Mayberry retract the first out-of-state driver to be the guest of honor on Founder's Day. Of course, the guest turns out to be a convicted pick-pocket.
The Merchant of Mayberry: Andy and Barney aid traveling salesman Bert Miller to site up a stand next to the local department store that is owned by the scrooge-like Ben Weaver.
Aunt Bee the Warden: The Mayberry jail is filled with moonshiners so Otis must attend his time at the Taylor's with a ruthless warden.

The County Nurse: Nurse Mary Simpson is trying to fetch all the farmers inoculated but the ring leader, Rafe Hollister, refuses. Andy then uses a petite reverse psychology by praising Hollister as a martyr for the cause against protecting one's self from rusty saws.
Andy and Barney in the Great City: While staying in Raleigh, Barney believes he is witnessing a man casing the hotel. Of course, Barney tails a man that turns out to be the house detective.
Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee: Clara convinces Aunt Bee that Andy is not getting married because he does not want to leave her alone. Desperate for a suitor, Bee sets her sites on the unkempt dry cleaner Fred Goss. This episode marks one of the very few times Opie's mother is mentioned.
Three's a Crowd: One of the favorites. Andy explains to the ever-present Barney that he wants to be alone with novel flame Mary. Barney, of course, concludes that Andy is planning to propose [how often did this happen in the series? ] and organizes a party.
The Bookie Barber: A barber from Raleigh sets up shop in Floyd's shop. Andy becomes suspicious when he notices the original barber always serving the same three customers.
Andy on Trial: A reporter hired to dig up dirt on Andy poses as a college student and Barney, trying to note her, spouts about how poorly hurry the sheriff's office is and how grand better job he would do.
Cousin Virgil: Barney's cousin is a clutz. Barney tries to accomplish Virgil's confidence by giving him tasks. When Virgil keeps failing, Barney gives up. Leave it to Andy to stare Virgil's suitable abilities.
Deputy Otis: Otis has been writing his brother and sister-in-law using courthouse stationery while serving his drunken weekends in the jail. When they resolve to pay him a visit, Otis gets Andy and Barney to let him pose as a deputy.

Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson are superb as usual in their roles: two traditional friends from Vietnam whose careers took different courses after a firefight that badly injured Jones. Jackson's Marines rescue a cowardly ambassador and his family from an embassy pelted with rocks, insults and the occasional sniper's bullet. In return for this service, the ambassador will testify that Jackson lost control and opened fire on a crowd fat of unarmed civilians, because his great at the Department of Set thinks he should to set the American reputation in the Middle East.

The basic yarn is qualified and the actors have astonishing presence, but there are a number of comic inconsistencies in the script, like:

1) Dale Dye, as Samuel L. Jackson's commanding officer, asks him whether he wants private counsel or the despicable upright office to picture him (if you scrutinize this in a theater paunchy of military personnel, interrogate this line to be among the funniest in the film) . This occurs lawful in the middle of him briefing the man whose court-martial he will convene, which happens absolutely never.

2) Why didn't anyone analyze the bullet holes in the embassy wall to assign trajectory?

The conflict between functions of place and defense isn't as implausible as the reviewers appear to mediate, particularly in a time when we deploy our soldiers and Marines to the world's least spruce corners as beat cops. Whether you spot this myth in Yemen or Kosovo or somewhere else, it can happen, it has happened and will probably continue to happen. Station wants its wars to decide neatly into ends comfortably discussed in meetings over tea, and gets annoyed when Defense reminds them that rules of engagement always obtain room for an exception famous for saving lives.

Rent it before you hold it.

Having served in the Marine Corps, I am a sucker for all things Marine. I am also a fan of both Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, but then again who isnt? These two powerhouse performers team up for one suited movie.

Jackson plays Terry Childers who is a 30 year combat customary colonel in the Marine Corps. Childers is sent into Yemen to rescue an Ambassador (Ben Kingsley) and his family. The mission gets quite hairy and terrorists and civilians both are caught in the firestorm to follow. The incident in seen as an embarassment at best and a political nightmare at worst by the folks in Washington and Childers is keep on military trial for destroy. He asks his archaic buddy Hayes Hodges (Jones) to defend him. Hodges also happens to owe Childers his life from events in Vietnam.

The movie has the outcome you might interrogate and along the procedure we are introduced to a not so hidden conspiracy to frame Childers for the crime. What separates this usual site from other films is the outstanding acting of Jackson and Jones. Jones takes center stage and wows you as a worn combat Marine turned military lawyer who struggles to search for his absorb identity and questions his value as a Marine along the contrivance. Jackson as always delivers a rock solid and emotional performance.

The direction of this movie is particularly label salubrious. It does an admirable job with addressing the recent military dilemna of fighting unseen enemies in urban environments. The director holds some things from you so that you will gain yourself questioning the acts of the Marines interested in the shooting. Only at the waste does he give you everything you need to know. This makes the movie better than most.

Overall it is substantial and the only thing that keeps it from being a five star flick is that Jackson's character, although central to the state, had to capture a backseat to Tommy Lee Jones performance. I notion the nature of the film would have benefited from more scenes surrounding how Childers was dealing with the consequences of his actions. Unruffled, it is a movie worth adding to your collection. Savor.

I like images...and viewing them in different ways...and this DVD, Ambient Art really provides that experience. 350 paintings that can be viewed as a straggle indicate or as a movie (image is scanned) and with either classical music or a more contemporary music. It is so trustworthy for me...I wish Ambient art would do a disc on Grandma Moses, one on Maxfield Parrish and one on Thomas Hart Benton...so we would also have some American images available.

The Impressionist disc has 11 artists and you can choose the artists you want to glance, the length of time you plan each, etc. It is very ample to have on at a party...no sound. Well, I unbiased like it a lot, and if you indulge in art here is an art experience different from a museum or a book. For me, it fills a need...I hope it will for you.

Then two of a plethora of poor things happen. A tunnel that you came through is sealed off leaving you only one design to go...down. And your partner reveals the reality that a guide didn't recommend the caves at all; she idea it would gain the excursion more adventurous in unexplored caves. There is no charted arrangement out.

Think that's a plight? How about shimmering your light down the next tunnel where you gawk an eerie human-ish looking figure crouched in the sunless peering aid at you?

The Descent has chills. There's high suspense. It goes without saying that there are genuine musty fashioned jump-out-of-the-dark scares (they are in a cave!) . No special effects needed here to generate excitement. The creatures are well designed and scary.

The narrative flows very well. The acting is better than the average Fright flick. And Director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers) keeps a better than average race of twists and turns coming.

Do indeed gape it if you're into the genre. The Descent is one of the movies on my Amazon Listmania List, "15 Flicks Guaranteed To Leave A Permanent Impression".

Note: The US theatrical version had a lame ending compared to the current UK version. The US DVD release gives you the option of which ending you'd steal to understanding. Go with the novel.
I'm not typically accustomed to going "gaga" over dismay films. It's not that I don't like them, I esteem them--but truth be told, it's hard to score genuinely sterling ones. I'm entertained by lots of the gory, splatter films that have recently dominated the box office. Usually, however, it's a matter of accepting the limitations within these films and getting whatever enjoyment you can out of the scenarios. It's been a very long time since I plan of a new scare movie as a 5 star event, so nothing could have surprised me more than "The Descent."

The preliminary setup is a noble one. Our heroines inaugurate to look some unknown, uncharted cave systems and speedy become trapped. Now our ladies must exhaust their resourcefulness and intelligence to try to catch out. The dynamics launch to play out between the women--good and bad--and a accurate alarm for survival starts to station in. We are squarely in a man versus nature psychological thriller atmosphere. It recalls for me "Initiate Water"--a film whose dismay is about helplessness and being stranded, not about sharks.

But objective as soon as I was positive where I was headed, the rug was pulled out. The last third becomes a monstrously bloody battle for survival. It is so well choreographed, I was sucked in wholeheartedly. And far from being victims--our heroines note intelligence, brutality, resilience, loyalty and a steady survival instinct. We've got some right female empowerment going on! For pure apprehension, this film goes out with a dependable bang.

I was completely blindsided by this one. There's a generous screenplay, a credible backstory, attractive actresses, grand cinematography and nice effects.

"The Descent" may not be the "best" movie I study this year--but as a pure adrenaline hasten, I promise you it will be one of my favorites. KGHarris, 12/06.

This is the film adaptation of what might be the best graphic new I`ve ever read. There are no words to report how great I savor the new humorous book so I attended the North American premiere of Tekkon Kinkreet at the Moma in NY with high expectations.

Not only did the movie not fail to meet them but in fact added sharp and unexpected layers to the narrative. I am an animator; I`m rarely cheerful with the technical aspects of most keen features but the production on Tekkon is flawless. The animation, character manufacture, backgrounds and camera work are all top notch. The two main characters are rendered in all their complexity and the movie doesn't disturbed away from the deep implications that the current myth holds within its pages.

The movie is faithful to the droll book and the storyline is basically the same. However, Michael Arias and studio 4C were sometimes inventive, albeit in appropriate and creative ways. The novel uniforms of the three warriors that Snake sends to destroy Dismal and White are pretty and reminiscent of a Moebius illustration- the final confrontation between Gloomy and the two remaining warriors is held in the amusement park instead of the car-shelter set (which makes room for unusual dynamic shots) - but my popular shift from the unusual material has to be the minotaur sequence. A lot of people complained that the movie is not as plucky as Mind Game (studio 4C`s previous adventure into beefy length features) but I disagree - the animation gets very experimental during the minotaur scene showing the thin line between reality and Black's violence saturated subconscious. I loved the scheme they communicated the internal struggle by using the graphic language of animation alone.

Overall, Mind Game's pastiche of animation styles is probably more intrepid but Tekkon more than compensates for it's more rigorous style with incredibly strong characters (MG characters came off as a runt wacky at times) and a yarn that is so generous that it hurts. If your eyes are not wet by the time Shadowy and White win separated you are a soul-less fiend and you may want to assume a career in advertising.

I haven't been so mad about an anime since Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence hit the theaters; it's a shame that while it was one of the most necessary movies of the year in Japan, Tekkon Kinkreet got very shrimp distribution in Europe and in the US - so do yourself a favor and take this DVD!

If you like Akira (Special Edition) or Ghost in the Shell, and idea they were just masterpieces despite their ambiguous style of storytelling, then you'll worship Tekkon Kinkreet. It's as good an anime as there ever was: it follows its hold style of storytelling, it has absorbing, even endearing characters, and the art is objective resplendent. It sits comfortably next to some of the best anime ever to reach to the States.

Tekkon Kinkreet follows two young boys, known around the city as the Cats, but to each other they are Murky and White. Gloomy is a brooding, violent youngster with a gift for taking damage and dishing it out. White is, simply, special; he's empathic, enjoys life, and has a deep sense of when things aren't proper. He also seems to be magically gifted. That gift, however, has left White an innocent boy, incapable of growing up and acting his age; that's why Unlit feels obligated to protect the young boy, and the that means eliminating any possible threat to him and White, as well as the city in which they live. Thus, these two have a few enemies, including the Yakuza, some unusual and much alien assassins, and a mysterious creature known by the youth in the city as the "Minotaur." All the while, the two are continually robbing and mugging those within their city so that they can do White's dream of living in a house on a beach....

Yeah, piquant, I know. But what makes the tale of Tekkon Kinkreet that worthy better is the surreality of the whole thing. It doesn't try to clarify much; it doesn't have to. White and Dusky can urge at mountainous speeds and leap ten feet into the air; aliens exist; and a boy has the power to link himself mentally to his best friend. Why? Because they do.... And all the while, it's as fantastically believable as a well told fantasy new.

Outside of that, the art and characters of Tekkon Kinkreet helps to drive the anecdote along. The settings contains so mighty detail that it's impossible to earn anything. If this was a "Where's Waldo" drawing, you'd never gain him. The character art is also fair, reminiscent of the short sequence in Destroy Bill, Volume 1.

Now, for the one drawback (which many older anime fans wouldn't even contemplate as a drawback) : this will be a very difficult anime for a new-comer to derive into. The account isn't difficult to follow, but it can be confusing and the ending leaves a lot unanswered, as is the wont of anime. Collected, though, if you have some experience with anime, then you won't be disappointed. The art is delicate, the narrative is involving, and the characters are endearing. I'd rate it higher if it were possible. Tekkon Kinkreet is definitely one of the best anime ever.

It's the waning days of the veteran regime in France. A conscientious but impoverished nobleman from the south travels to Versailles to petition the royal government for funds to drain his swamps so that his tenants can be spared periodic outbreaks of disease. Instead of finding the sympathetic ears he expected, he finds a government nearing bankruptcy, a well-intentioned but befuddled king who is surrounded by a bureaucracy trying to temper the king's naive generosity and stave off the final collapse, and an aristocracy that has descended into a obnoxious comedy of manners. All substantive understanding at court has been replaced by endless games of witticisms, whereby a person's social standing and political access are functions of mastering the art of the putdown . . . preferrably in as ascerbic a manner as possible.

To everyone's surprise -- including his enjoy -- our hero turns out to be quite trustworthy at the art of malicious wit. First trying to utilize his new-found talent to rush up his campaign to drain his swamps, he soon succumbs to the appeal of the game for the game's sake. A series of events eventually snaps him aid to reality, and therein lies the location of the section.

This is a supremely bright costume part. The cast is respectable, the settings and costumes dead-on legal, the dialog tantalizing and sophisticated. In the raze, it's really a gorgeously-filmed morality play about the triumph of conscience over wealth, power, and hollow social graces. The only precise fault with the movie from a historical perspective is that it portrays Louis XVI as the affable nitwit of favorite yarn instead of the serious monarch overwhelmed by ultimately uncontrollable events that he really was.

This movie is so pleasant at drawing you in that you soon end to look you're reading subtitles (at least if you don't inform fluent French) . Although the location hinges on the most pleasing subtleties of 18th-century court French, the yarn telegraphs through with searing clarity. And it's a memoir for all times, all places, and all tongues.

This reminds me a lot of Risky Liaisons (1988) and Valmont (1989) in its cynicism and enchanting wit. Region in France during the same time period (the eve of the French Revolution--that's the eighteenth century, reviewers), Ridicule concentrates not so powerful on sexual intrigues (although there is plenty of that) but on cynical wit as though in homage to Voltaire, France's master of satire whose spirit is suffused throughout.

First a warning. Don't let the rather unfriendly crudity of the opening scene mislead you. That is meant merely as satire, not as a presaging of further crudities to approach. It is also meant as a kind of cinematic joke since there is no comparable female nudity in the entire film. Indeed, there is no comparable, shall we say "expression," anywhere in legitimate filmdom that I am aware of. So let it pass or discontinuance your eyes.

Charles Berling stars as Gregoire Ponceludon de Malavoy, a country engineer who comes to Versailles to find financial backing to drain a swamp to attach the peasants who are dying of mosquito-borne disease. ("Peasants feed aristocrats as well as mosquitos.") He discovers very mercurial that a diagram to an audience with Louis XVI is through gaining a reputation as a clever courtier. Guided by M. Bellegarde (Jean Rochefort), a retired courtier himself, Ponceludon hasty picks up the games of wit and ridicule that reign at court. His fast and clever mind and youthful worthy looks obtain the attention of the king's mistress, Madame de Blayac (Fanny Ardant) who demonstrates how access to the king can approach through her bedroom. Ponceludon is precise only in his desire to drain the swamp and so readily allows himself to become another of Blayac's lovers in exchange for a chance to reveal his program to Louis XVI.

At the same time he meets Bellegarde's daughter Mathide (Judith Godrèche), an idealistic beauty with a scientific crooked, who is betrothed to a dying ancient man of wealth and plot. They drop in esteem, but their differing agendas preserve them apart.

What makes this film such a delight is the enjoyable plan it satirizes the decadent court of Louis XVI. The dramatic irony is superior and absolute in the sense that at no time does director Patrice Leconte give even the slightest hint that any of the byzantine sycophants at court are aware that Danton and the Fright await them. Throw in the impending Industrial (and scientific) Revolution symbolized in the develop of Ponceludon and Mathide, and the ancien régime with its antiquated feudal titles and ghastly privilege is seen for what it was, a parasitic anachronism, ripe to rot for destruction.

The sets, the direction and especially the acting are good. Mature Rochefort is particularly generous in a portion that depends on a directive and expressive face amid the whispers at court. Berling is quiet and believable as a man with a ample mission, adroit at repartee, like and dueling, a modest and earnest hero.

Godrèche is advantageous, but seems a limited restrained here. She is an impossibly healthy, magnificent beauty no man could resist. I first saw her as a 17-year-old in The Disenchanted (1990) where her adolescent charm was carefully and craftily displayed by director Benoît Jacquot. Here Leconte concentrates on her strength of character.

Fanny Ardant's Madame de Blayac is a Machiavellian mistress of love's duplicity, very powerful like the Marquise de Merteuil from Perilous Liaisons and Valmont. Her performance compares favorably with that of Glenn Finish and Annette Bening, respectively, although there is an earthy quality to Ardant that seems most realistic. Her character is also more vulnerable.

The sets are sumptuous without being artificially showy. The gray, high-topped wigs and the beaked-nosed masks at ball are charming and, along with the gilded attire, the caked makeup, etc., somehow suggest the upright set of costume and personal hygiene circa 1784, reminding me that in those days people did not generally wear underpants or capture showers.

"The soul of wit is to know one's space."

When asked by the king to say something witty about the king himself, Ponceludon returns: "The king is not a subject." The king asks if this is not a (lowly) pun, but is assured that it is a "play on words."

When Blayac discerns that Ponceludon is not entirely smitten with her, she responds, "Learn to shroud your insincerity so that I may yield without dishonor."

The film closes with a scene in England on a cliff overlooking the English channel. Bellegarde and another deem on the changes after the revolution: "Wit was the very air we breathed." "Now the bloated rhetoric of Danton rules in set of wit." Bellegarde's hat is blown off by the wind. His companion remarks: "Better your hat than your head."

By the diagram, the subtitles (and this is usually not the case) are salubrious, inventive and faithful enough, while comfortably brief, to have been done by a professional translator instead of by someone handy who is passably bilingual.

An ex-con engineers a hasten track heist in "The Killing," a taut and suspenseful film noir from director Stanley Kubrick. Johnny Clay (Apt Hayden) is novel out of Alcatraz after five years, and immediately goes to work on a job he figures to be worth upwards of two million dollars. He puts together a gang who are not dependable criminals, unbiased "Some guys with problems and a microscopic larceny in them." Marvin (Jay C. Flippen) is estimable for some front money Johnny needs; George (Elisha Cook Jr.) is a cashier at the track, and Mike (Joe Sawyer) is a bartender there; Randy (Ted de Corsia) is a cop with loan shark payment problems. Clay's got it all figured out, a precision belief that can't go base as long as everyone does his fragment and keeps smooth about it, before and after. But George has a wife, Sherry (Marie Windsor), who wants nice things, and he can't resist the temptation to let her know it's all going to accumulate better sincere soon. Distress is, Sherry has a boyfriend, Val (Vince Edwards), who has more than a cramped larceny in him, as well. As it is with all "perfect" plans, there are, after all, imperfections. The presentation of this film is not one of them, however; Kubrick keeps the tension high throughout, working with a tight record and an out of sequence chronology through which he dispenses bits of information, building the suspense, until it all fits together in the raze like pieces of a giant puzzle (Powerful the same as Tarantino would do with "Pulp Fiction" many years later) . The stoic delivery, coupled with the stark murky and white photography of the film, creates an almost surreal, fatalistic ambience that works so well with this material; especially at the slay, for it underscores the climax and heightens the drama of the final moment, all of which makes for a truly unforgettable scene. The supporting cast includes Coleen Gray (Fay), Kola Awariani (Maurice), Joe Turkel (Shrimp), and Timothy Carey, who makes his composed and indifferent hit man, Nikki Arane, one of the most memorable characters in the film. It must be celebrated, however, that Elisha Cook Jr. gives what may have been his best performance ever, here. His scene, after it all goes poor for him and he stumbles into his apartment, bullet holes in his face and wide-eyed with acceptance, to confront Sherry, is so frosty and underplayed that it becomes one of the lasting impressions of the movie. Kubrick wrote the screenplay (with some assist from Jim Thompson with the dialogue), adapted from the fresh "Trim Wreck" by Lionel White. "The Killing" is one of Kubrick's earliest and best films; and it's not honest for Kubrick fans or for those who esteem the "noir" genre. This is an capable fraction of work that will definitely be appreciated by anyone who likes righteous movies.

Flippen as Marvin Unger (both actors had appeared in "The Three Stooges" skits more than once) ; then Ample Hayden as the main character, Johnny Clay: though one of the beauties of this film is that all of the actors had such memorable performances. The small acting abilities of these stars only added to the subtle gritty reality of their lumpenprolitariat roles which carried this film as considerable as any special execute.

While Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay and maintained a number of elements from the book, he eliminated Lionel White's character of Maurice Cohen and had Johnny Clay buy those duties; and also replaced the boxer, Tex, with the pudgy (and hairy) wrestler Maurice Oboukhof for the spectacular bar room fight diversion. In the book, Marvin Unger deeply despised Johnny Clay; but in the movie, Unger demonstrated a fatherly pride and deep paternal admiration for Johnny Clay - the movie is well-known for its admirable male commeraderie!

In the book, Johnny tied a loose handkerchief around his face as a disguise, but this was changed in the movie to a burly rubber clown camouflage - almost an precise duplicate of the masks published in police photographs traditional by the bandits in the 1950s Brinks robbery in Boston; a robbery that was then nationally advertised as "The Crime of the Century"! The similarities continued as the Brinks building was robbed of two million dollars by seven armed men in rubber masks and got orderly away. This is too strong a resemblance to be ignored, and the well-read Stanley Kubrick may have also been influenced by this event, coupled with the new Natty Atomize, to earn his advanced and visionary robbery debut film.

Still, the movie: THE KILLING by Stanley Kubrick, is a shining and typically Kubrickian ahead-of-its-time work of art which is a *must* watching experience in sunless & white for all its lasting and engrossing scenes.
